Commentary on Examining the Object. Divine Vinaya. Commentary on Examining the Object. Divine Vinaya. In Sanskrit: Alambanapariksha Tika. In Tibetan: Commentary on Examining the Object. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! With a mind embraced by compassion, I bow with my head to the all-knowing, and will thoroughly explain the examination of the object. Those who think that the object of eye consciousness, etc., is an external thing, if they think that these are atoms or aggregates of atoms, then this first sentence, 'which are the forms of eye, etc., consciousness,' shows what is to be expressed, the nature of what is to be abandoned. 'Because it is the cause,' and 'because the consciousness that appears there arises,' this shows the reason for the perversion. The purpose and connection are to be inferred by implication. The implication should be understood as follows: this treatise is composed in order to refute external objects and to establish internal ones. Therefore, by composing this treatise to refute and establish external and internal things, it will be shown by implication that refutation and establishment are themselves the necessity, and that the treatise is the means. In this way, those who prioritize reasoning will not engage in what is unnecessary, nor in what is not a means. Here, refuting external objects and establishing internal ones through reasoning is what is to be expressed. Refutation and establishment themselves are the necessity. That necessity is also accomplished by this treatise, so the treatise is

This is the method for this purpose. Therefore, the treatise and the need are related by the nature of the method and what arises from the method. Thus, in order to refute the meanings of external and internal, and to strongly establish, this treatise is composed. If, after abiding in this way, some among hundreds obstruct and strongly establish, what will these do? If they are said to be of no use anywhere, then it is said here that those who abandon and adopt, who refute and strongly establish, are those who abandon and adopt both. Thus, in order to abandon external objects, one refutes, and in any case, from refuting, one knows that external objects are to be abandoned, thinking that they should be abandoned, one refutes. Similarly, from strongly establishing, one knows that the inner meaning is to be adopted, thinking that it should be adopted, one strongly establishes. Therefore, in order to abandon and adopt what should be abandoned and adopted externally and internally, the need has also been explained by refuting and strongly establishing. If so, then how does the first word show the nature of what should be abandoned as it is said, and similarly, it should also show the nature of what should be adopted, if asked. Here it is said that those who speak of external objects are very harmful because they fully understand the meaning of external objects, therefore, only after the first word has shown, cut off those, it should be refuted. Later, by the way, the knowable of the inner nature, whatever appears like an external object, is the meaning, as it is said, this is to adopt the inner, for the time being this is the general meaning. The meaning of the branches should be said, whatever consciousnesses of the eye and so on are called, the opponent completely clings to the meaning of external objects, it is not thought to be so, therefore it is said whatever. Whatever faculties have eyes and so on, those are eyes and so on, and by saying 'and so on', it includes ears and so on up to mind. Thus, mind is also considered to have external objects as its object, therefore, its object should also be refuted here once and for all. What is the use of establishing it? Treatise

By whatever action, it will not prevent establishing it as another part of that object. Therefore, Master Dharmapala said in his commentary: What is said so much to establish the object of consciousness is because of knowing it. I do not understand it because its thought is profound. The consciousness of the eye, etc., is the consciousness of the eye, etc. Only with many aspects of the eye, etc., it will also show that the aspect of consciousness is also many, so for consciousness, the word 'many' should be shown, for example: for copper and leaves, etc., becoming red. What is called the object, the external object, the external object is the outside, which is a synonym for the place where consciousness goes. Because it is to be understood, it is meaning, which is a synonym for knowing and grasping. The word 'meaning' here is to be shown as a different name for the object, but it is not to establish something real. Although such a collection is also explained as an object, it is not real. What is called 'thinking it is an object' is a synonym for admitting it is what is to be grasped. What is called 'are those atoms?' means that those opponents will admit that the object of consciousness is very fine dust. Those are both dust and very small, so they are atoms, because there is no finer than this, so it is a synonym for very small. Only the collection of atoms arises and ceases, but others think that each of these collections is an object, just as the abilities of the senses are determined separately, so the collection of form and taste, etc., is also the object of the senses that are determined separately, consciousness also has the ability to determine the elimination of reality, therefore, it is said that each dust is an object, not the whole. Even if it is a collection, how can those very small ones become objects? Therefore, it is said that because it is its cause, those are small, but because it is real, it is the cause of consciousness.
