It is the part of the grasped. If something that does not generate self-appearing consciousness is also an object, then it becomes too broad, which is a harmful measure.\ Or, atoms are not objects, because they do not necessarily hold their own nature, like sense consciousness. Different dharmas are the part of the grasped, and the part of the grasped is the object, which can be established. If not necessarily holding one's own nature is also an object, then it becomes too broad, which is a harmful measure. These two arguments are the explanation of the teacher Dharmakirti, which I wrote, not my own explanation. In this way, for the time being, it is prevented that atoms are objects. In order to prevent aggregation, it is said "even if the aggregation appears as that," etc. Although consciousness appears to have aggregation, however, aggregation is not an object, because consciousness is not produced from it. Even if it is not produced from it, why can't it become an object? Therefore, it is said "any thing that appears as self," etc. Thus, any thing that appears as self, that is, generates consciousness that appears as itself, that can become an object. It is said that consciousness follows the nature of any thing, and it is also the generator, then it can become the cause of the object, otherwise it is not. If only the generator is the object, why is that? Thus, it is said "because that is," etc. Thus, that is said in the treatise to be the cause of arising. It is said in the treatise: Any thing is also the cause of the arising of mind and mental factors, and after those arise, it also establishes the name of experiencing that thing, that is the object. It is said: Any thing generates mind and mental factors, and after those mind and mental factors arise, for that thing, it is experienced in this way, the thing that establishes such a name is called an object. Therefore, it is said "is also the cause of arising,"

Therefore, it is established that it is the cause that generates the different aspects. Because having such an appearance is widely known here, it is not explained. Therefore, whatever has the characteristics of both is said to be the object. If someone thinks that the aggregate also generates, therefore it is said, "The aggregate is not like that either," the aggregate is not a generator. If it does not generate consciousness, how can it become an object? If asked why it is not a generator, it is said, "Because it is unreal," because the aggregate is not real, so it is not a generator, because unreal things do not have the ability to produce results. The unreality of the aggregate will be argued below. Whatever is not real is not a generator, for this it is said, like two moons. For example, because it is unreal, the second moon is not the cause of the consciousness that appears as the second moon. Similarly, the aggregate is not the cause of the consciousness that appears as itself. If the second moon does not generate it, then it becomes causeless. Therefore, it is said, "Because the sense faculty is incomplete," etc., it is not causeless, because the deterioration of the sense faculty will not see the second moon. For example, when the eye faculty deteriorates due to blurring, the consciousness that appears as the second moon will arise, but that is not generated by the second moon. When it is not generated by it, even if the consciousness of the two moons appears as the two moons, it is not its object. Therefore, it is said that because it is not a generator, it will not become an object. Here, the word "incomplete" means deterioration. After fully arguing on the analogy in this way, in order to be close to things, it is said, "Similarly, because it is not real," etc. Just as the second moon is not the cause of consciousness because it is unreal, because it is not a cause, so it is not its object.

Moreover, aggregates are not the cause of consciousness because they are not real. Because they are not the cause, they are not its object. The argument here is: aggregates are not the cause because they are not real, like the double moon. The dissimilar dharma is consciousness. The fact that things that are not real have no function is a fallacious proof. Alternatively, aggregates are not objects because they are not the cause, like the double moon. The dissimilar dharma is the apprehended aspect; that the apprehended aspect is both the cause and the object can be established. If what is not the cause is also the object, then the double moon and so forth would also become objects, which would lead to an absurdity; this is a fallacious proof. These two proofs were also stated by Master Dharmapala. Having refuted both positions in this way, in order to conclude, it is said, "Therefore, neither internal nor external is a valid object of mind," and so forth. According to the way it is explained, in either case, external objects are not valid objects of consciousness. External refers to things other than consciousness. "Either" refers to the view of atoms and the view of aggregates. "Mind" refers to consciousness. Why is it not valid? Therefore, it is said, "Because one aspect is incomplete," and so forth. Like this, for the view of atoms, there is only the cause, but not its aspect. For the view of aggregates, there is only its aspect, but not the cause. Therefore, because each aspect is incomplete, the meaning of "atom" and "aggregate" is not an object. Here it is said that the aspects of an object have two aspects: establishing its own aspect and being the cause. Since atoms and aggregates do not have these, it is said that they are not objects. Where it appears that "from where an object possesses two natures," it is merely that those two aspects are called the sound of two natures. Having refuted both positions in this way, in order to establish the third position, it is said, "Regarding this, some people," and so forth. For those who assert external objects, in this view, some, such as Pakola, assert atoms.
