can be inferred. It is not because it is transformed from the elements. Thus, from the result, only the cause can be inferred, but not the difference of the cause, because the mark of difference cannot be universally present. Just as from smoke only fire can be inferred, but not the difference of fire, such as grass and leaves, similarly, from the characteristic of the consciousness of the result, only the cause can be inferred, but not the difference of the cause, such as being transformed from the elements. For example, according to the view of the Vaibhashikas, the sense organs are transformed from the elements. According to the venerable Sanghasena, the essence of the elements is mind. According to the Yogacharas, the essence of consciousness is mind. According to the Madhyamikas, it exists conventionally. According to the Samkhyas, it is the notion of "I," so such differences cannot be inferred. Therefore, since the ability only infers the cause, only the ability will be inferred. Here, one might think that ability depends on the one who has the ability, and it is not possible for the able to be without a basis. The one who has the ability is the sense organ, and it is transformed from the elements, so it is established that the sense organ is transformed from the elements. Therefore, it is said, "That is not contradictory to consciousness." If a support is necessarily needed, then consciousness itself is the support. For example, consciousness is known in both ways, as the nature of distinguishing objects individually and as the nature of self-awareness. Therefore, that which is completely imbued by karma is the support. By what means would the ability not be able to be the support of consciousness, which is simultaneous with consciousness? There is no contradiction. Here, one might think that the ability that exists in the elements can also produce other results, and the ability that exists in consciousness can also produce other results. Therefore, one should know that the sense organ is definitely transformed from the elements. To dispel this doubt, it is said, "Ability can also exist in consciousness." Here, there is no difference caused by the support. For example, if the ability exists in consciousness,

Even if it abides in consciousness, or abides in something else, in all circumstances, it can only do things like seeing form, etc. Therefore, there is no difference in producing results. The so-called "un-demonstrable self-nature" is because the self-nature of the sense faculty admitted by others cannot be perceived by the sense faculty, so it cannot be observed. What has not been observed cannot be demonstrated either. Therefore, the sense faculty admitted by others is the un-demonstrable self-nature. So, what is the cause of the power of the sense faculty? In order to indicate it by way of conclusion, therefore, it is said, "Thus, the nature of the object," and so on. Just as this consciousness arises from the power of the sense faculty, so does the power of the sense faculty. The consciousness that causes the sense faculty to arise also arises from the previous consciousness, and the power of the sense faculty of the previous consciousness also arises from the previous one. Thus, just as the power of the sense faculty and the consciousness with the image of the object are mutually causal, this succession of cause and effect has no beginning in time, so these two should be regarded as beginningless time. In order to indicate the meaning of the sutra, the commentator said, "Eye is called," and so on. What is indicated by the power of the sense faculty called eye, and the internal form that arises together, or relies on what was previously produced, arises for the consciousness with the image of the uncertain meaning. Just as the consciousness arises only from the definite meaning, as the outsiders say, it is not like that here. Therefore, it is said that consciousness arises as the meaning appears without being particularly distinguished. Others say that it appears as an unspeakable meaning, but this meaning does not seem very relevant, because there is no need for the unspeakable here at all. Thus, all of one's own characteristics are unspeakable. If consciousness that appears in this arises, then what can actually be accomplished? Or, is it that whatever consciousness that arises with the image of meaning cannot be spoken? For that, is it because there is nothing that it cannot be spoken? Or self-
