rely on. At that time, because it possesses certainty, it is a correct reason, like a seemingly similar reason that fits the occasion. How does it change? It abides distinctly in the meaning of a reason focused on specifics. It is impermanent, because it is made, and so on. If it is particularly emphasized, then it is not appropriate to consider the made as the occasion, because the permanent dharma is obstructed by valid cognition. Furthermore, if the dharma of permanence does not appear, then how can this non-existence be negated? And if it is said to be contradictory, if it is negated, then like what is to be measured, etc., it will become a common uncertainty, because merely negating the permanent dharma, it is also possible to merely abandon the impermanent. However, if it is said to be contradictory, then it is unreasonable to disguise an uncertain non-reason as a reason. Furthermore, from different sutras, what is said about both is, which reason, in the occasion of the reason, speaks of the occasion that has passed? Why has the occasion passed? Because it has transcended direct perception or scripture or both, and has transcended everything, it is called the occasion that has passed. If it is asked again, why is it contradictory to direct perception and scripture? Because four characteristics are explained, namely, possessing appearance and possessing remainder, and being seen by the refuter, thus the four characteristics of reason are considered. Possessing the former and seeing universally is pervasion. Possessing remainder exists in the universal. Seeing universally is not seeing. The word "and" indicates contradiction. Therefore, by explaining, it is stated that whatever contradicts inference, direct perception, and scripture is a seemingly reasonable intellect. Therefore, in this way, it is shown through inference, becoming a sign with three aspects, and the three that contradict direct perception and scripture. There are also three types, namely, contradicting direct perception, contradicting scripture, and contradicting both. Contradicting direct perception, for example, fire is cold, because it is a substance, like water. Contradicting scripture, for example, a Brahmin should drink alcohol, because it is a substance, like milk. Contradicting both, for example, the eye has no appearance, because it is a sense faculty, like the nose, etc. This contradiction with the tenet is not a contradiction.
