Furthermore, if the opponent cannot comprehend due to ignorance, does that mean they cannot be refuted? If it is certain that they cannot comprehend and therefore cannot be refuted, then what is to be done by stating a proof that is certain in some way along with this? Therefore, it would become something already accepted. Only after completely cutting off can one refute, so it should be combined with "the opponent argues due to ignorance of the eighth consciousness." For the opponent, how can one not refute that view with that view? Regarding other doubts, even if one cannot understand the meaning with the spoken words, it should be understood by other faculties, because the distinction of things exists. Not understanding the distinction of meaning is because the statement of things is determined by conditions. Fully understanding the meaning of the words of proof is the point of subjugation. Therefore, when commenting on the Explanation, it says, "Not generating consciousness towards the object of the meaning of words is not understanding." Thus, it is explained that for this action, one must state the words that the opponent strongly combines, and even so, since there is no difference from not generating consciousness towards the object of the true meaning, the opponent is the point of subjugation, and there is no contradiction whatsoever. Others see that meaning must be stated, wanting to abandon stating the meaning of the sutra, not understanding the meaning is also not understanding, saying this is not out of trust. Even if the faculties separately understand the meaning of the words of proof, but the opponent does not separately understand, whatever the opponent does not separately understand and does not comprehend, that is not understanding, this is writing the letters of a tenet. There is no contradiction for that which is the tenet of action, those are all spoken by the same one. What is the meaning that the faculties separately understand? One should know that the faculties understand, the opponent does not understand the meaning, it is the point of subjugation. Do not subjugate. It is explained: Because one does not understand the meaning, one should not say that the opponent is to be refuted, this is combined in other treatises that point out faults. That is also unreasonable, because that is a commentary treatise on the Explanation. Not comprehending the proof itself, for example, subsequent recollection.

As it is said, the point of not understanding the answer is the point of victory. How is it that one does not understand the answer? It is explained: Because the object is not indicated. Because the opponent is unable to understand the answer, it is because the object of any consciousness is not indicated, this is just a summary word. Like this, it is said for the purpose of indicating the object of refutation. Moreover, after abandoning it, when what is said by another debater is not what is said afterwards, at that time the object of the answer does not exist, and becoming like that is what is said afterwards, because it is meaningful, therefore it is in the state of "cannot", or not understanding the answer itself is the point of victory. Similarly, not knowing itself is also not understanding the answer, so it is the point of victory, this is the summary of the Dharma for the sect. Because if the debater does not understand the object of refutation, how can he speak of the object of the answer? Some examples say that the object of the answer will become speaking of faults. If so, then what is the answer to the answer and the object of the answer? That refers to being associated with such words. If one does not understand the answer and the object of the answer, how can one speak of the answer? Not understanding its object and not understanding the answer is the point of victory, because there is no courage to understand. It is in a state of being unable to speak. Why? Because if it is spoken, the meaning will become something else, so it is a person without courage. How is it that the object does not exist? It is said that there is no definite grasping of meaning, etc., because there is no definite grasping of the meaning of the former answer, therefore the debater does not say it afterwards. Because the object of what is said afterwards is not indicated, therefore one cannot understand the answer, therefore it is not understanding the answer, because one does not know or does not speak. Why is it that not understanding the object of the answer is not understanding the answer? Because for a person who does not understand the answer and its object, is it not understanding the understanding of the answer? Or what will the object of the understanding of the answer become? This is the summary. Therefore, not understanding its two answers is also not understanding, this is the cause of not having courage. Then, not understanding the answer itself, how does that lack of courage become its nature?
