This is how it is done. The certainty of clinging to the same thing is because the distinctive nature of the arising habit of such consciousness's cause comes from beginningless time. Here, too, it is like two people with cataracts seeing two moons. One with cataracts says to two with cataracts, "Look," pointing to another moon, and says, "I see it." To this, the indicator will think, "I have shown this to this person," and become arrogant, while the listener will think, "This person has shown this to me." However, these two are merely experiencing their own appearances separately. Similarly, here, too, because of the certainty of knowing it as the same thing, one will approach the consciousness of self and others as an expression. Those who assert external objects, like those who enter a kusha grass thicket, say things like, "The appearance is action," and so on. For which consciousness does action and so on appear only within it, that is the consciousness that appears as action and so on. That itself is the sign of the fruit. What arises from that is what arises from the sign of the fruit of the consciousness that appears as action and so on. Those who know the minds of others, do they take the self-nature of the minds of others as their object, or not? These are two investigations. To show the fault in the first investigation, it is said, "If it takes as an object," and so on. If it takes as an object, then its object will exist in a separate place. To closely indicate the second investigation, it is said, "If it does not take as an object," and so on. However, if it does not take as an object, then how does one know that the mind of another exists at that time? If one thinks that it will not be known, then without knowing its own nature, one speaks of actions and so on. In this way, if the imputation of existence depends on personally knowing it, then it will not exist if it does not exist, which is the former position. The proponent of the established conclusion says, "This will also have the same fault," and says, "This will also have the same fault," to show the sameness. "With actions and words, etc.," is said, and so on. Those who assert external objects also understand the minds of others through the signs of actions and words.

If there is knowledge, then does the mind of another take its own nature as an object, or not? If it takes it as an object, then at that time, the appearance of the mind of another will also become known. If it does not take it as an object, then at that time, how does the knower or the realized one know? To welcome the doubts of the proponents of external objects, if it is said that inference is because of understanding the generalities, etc. Because the sign is not pervaded by the distinctions that pervade the generalities, therefore only the generalities are known, but not the distinctions, this is the doubt of the former aspect. The proponent of the established tenet says, what is the generality, etc. What is the generality? Is it the mind of another itself, or something different, or is it something that cannot be expressed? These are three examinations. In order to expand the two examinations, if it is otherness and inexpressibility, etc., if according to the aspect of being otherness, then only the generality is grasped, but not the mind of another. Therefore, how will the knower know that mind of another? For the aspect of the inexpressible, the same reasoning applies. In order to eliminate the aspect of not being different, the generality is not the mind of another itself, thus it is said. The generality is not the nature of another's mind. Why? If that were the case, etc. If it is admitted that the generality that is not different from another's mind is grasped, then it would follow that the appearance of another's mind is also known, which has been said before. To this, someone might think, even if that is the case, what is the fault? Therefore, this is not the reasoning of subsequent inference, etc. In order to explain that in detail. Subsequent inference is not in the nature of the object, etc. Subsequent inference does not admit to being the one who grasps its own characteristics. Direct perception is an example of dissimilar phenomena. If it is said, why is it not admitted to be the one who grasps its own characteristics? Because it would lead to the appearance being indistinguishable, etc., thus it is said that subsequent inference will also become clear and apparent like direct perception. Etc.
