Now, it is said, "Also with that," etc., indicating that if there is no arising, there is no harm, thus excluding the different aspects of the desired expression with a single quantity, without contradicting or confusing faults, and it is prior. How does another ask? In what way, how is it that if there is no arising, and the way of not coexisting, such a similar instance of reason and if there is no arising also. In what way is the possession of the desired singular number excluded? The tenet proponents correctly point out, saying "one," etc. The characteristic of a single reason is reasonable, if only because one's own thesis exists, how can one's own thesis be confused? If it is not so, the characteristic of if there is no arising will be lost. Any subject that has one characteristic, that subject is that thing, because it is that, so other opposing reasons are also contradictory, then how can it have the characteristic of a reason? The thesis of the nature of a single reason, what harms it is only the existence of other dharmas that contradict it, even if there is none, it exists, so it is not if there is no arising, so it is the same as harm. Since harm cannot be the same, it is excluded only by the similar instance of reason. Here, too, one wants to speak of other faults, so the discrimination says "other also," etc. Things are real, what is the similar instance of reason, that is impossible, is this correct knowledge? Or the opposite statement? Or the thesis, or knowledge contrary to this is considered a reason. From where does one speak of the characteristic of having a single quantity that one wants to express? Or this similar instance of reason does not show the establishment of the thesis and the opposite. Even if it really exists, it is thought that other faults have not been seen, so it is said, "What will happen?" If it is thought that there is some fault in the previous discrimination or the latter one? The tenet proponents say that if the similar instance of reason is impossible, and it is considered a reason such as correct knowledge, then at this time this characteristic is not the single quantity that one wants to express.

Why is that? Because it cannot be determined. For any entity, if there is no possibility of a counter-argument to the reason, then it is stated as such. These words are spoken in consideration of the views of others. Because others believe that even if there is no connection with what is seen or unseen (by us), if it does not exist, the result will not arise, therefore, such a counter-argument to the reason is possible. That is, even if it is not obvious, it sometimes happens, so it cannot be determined that the entity itself does not possess (a certain quality). But for us, who speak of the reason of connection as 'if it does not exist, it will not arise,' a counter-argument to the reason is impossible. This is very certain. Because by means of a single reason that is established by valid cognition, has a connection of essence and qualities arising from that essence, and possesses the reason of 'if it does not exist, it will not arise,' it is able to establish what it is to be established (the conclusion), so it is impossible to have a counter-argument that can establish something contradictory to the nature of that essence on the same subject. Because it is impossible for entities to have two contradictory natures, if there is a contradictory quality, then the natures will be different. If it is possible to establish a contradictory quality, then it is impossible to first establish through valid cognition that the entity has a relationship of 'if it does not exist, it will not arise' with what it is to be established. If we cannot determine for certain that there is no counter-argument to the reason for an entity, even so, if we insist that a counter-argument to the reason is impossible, then why not consider (this insistence) as the definition of reason, according to the consistency of the stated number? (Answer:) Because it has already been said that 'the property to be proven is uncertain,' and so on. If the reason of the property that is the object of cognition is of an uncertain nature, then why would its definition not become the property to be proven? For example, like having doubt about the property of the subject. Whatever the definition of doubt is, even if it contradicts non-reason, it will not become a reason. Any entity for which a counter-argument to the reason has not been seen is because it is impossible for that entity itself to have a counter-argument to the reason. If one doubts that it is impossible for that entity to have a counter-argument to the reason, then it is unreasonable to doubt harm in the absence of damaging cognition. Thus it is said: 'The cognition of harm has not arisen...'
