Commentary on the Drops of Reasoning Commentary on the Drops of Reasoning In Indian language: Hetubinduvivaraṇa (हेतुबिन्दुविवरण, hetubinduvivaraṇa, hetu-bindu-vivarana, Explanation of the Drop of Reason). In Tibetan: Commentary on the Drops of Reasoning. Homage to the Bhagavan Vajradhara! With great compassion truly generated to protect beings from afflictions. Accumulating the essence of merit and wisdom, eliminating the fatigue of the vast cause. Relying on the mountain where immaculate wisdom arises, encompassing all knowable things. To the victorious sun who destroys the darkness of the world's heart, I bow with my head. For the works of Dharmakirti, even if studied, further study is beautiful. Even if grapes are pressed, why would one discard their sweetness? The single light in the hearts of beings, if measured from the perspective of reason, what profound teachings are there? How could my foolish mind comprehend them? Nevertheless, even from me, for those who are somewhat less intelligent, I will dissect the Drops of Reasoning. Some say that the necessity of composing treatises that elaborate on hidden meanings and so forth is to lead listeners into the subject matter. All treatises, or certain actions, unless the necessity is stated, who would accept them? This is unreasonable. Because by stating, "The necessity of this treatise is this," the particularity of the necessity is determined as the method. Because one does not enter into what is not a method, therefore, with the thought of pursuing the meaning, the treatise becomes equal. Therefore, stating words that accord with the meaning, expressing this view is unreasonable. Because those who possess thought, those who pursue necessity, arise from the existence of that definite method. For example, actions such as plowing fields, the method of obtaining harvests and so forth, seeds and so forth, seeds distinct from non-seeds, are necessarily determined. Otherwise, arising from an uncertain method, pursuing meaning, will be abandoned by those who possess thought. Because it is impossible for the actions of a reliable person to arise or be about to arise from a method. Even if it is uncertain, there is a connection.

Therefore, since these certain and feasible methods without omission can accomplish the desired fruit of expression, those with discernment will enter, so they will not be completely abandoned. If certainty is only through valid cognition, then necessary speech has no valid cognition, because sounds and external meanings have no connection. The valid cognition that wants to express also has no certainty about how it enters into things, so the necessity of detailed explanation has no certainty about special methods. How can it not be established accordingly, whatever meaning one wants to express? Because one thinks of something else and speaks of something else, deception is seen upon entering, so there is no trust in all worldly people. If the necessary distinction is placed close, and doubt arises in the object of detailed explanation that becomes its means, therefore it is said to enter from the very act of plowing fields, etc., determining whether it is a seed or not a seed. It is not so, because doubt arises about the means of necessary distinction before it is expressed, so the valid cognition that establishes and harms does not exist, and that comes from the power of reason. In order to show the necessity of inference, etc., seeing those detailed explanations, is this the necessity of showing inference, or is it something else? Who can eliminate such doubt about things when entering beforehand? Furthermore, is this unnecessary, or do we want to know that we have the necessity of manifestation? Since entry is possible, placing necessary speech close is meaningless. Therefore, whatever speech abandons necessity, or those who have discernment about its meaning, will not create or show, like the speech called "the tenth apple," etc., and like the discernment of a crow's tooth. This or its meaning is also unnecessary, because when refuting without observing the particularity, in order to say that it is not established, the necessary speech is placed first. For this, in order to show it, the nature of the words called "in order to show it" speaks of the necessity of detailed explanation, just as the realization of what is to be expressed by language is the necessity of language, and it also exists here, namely the components of words, etc.
