When one realizes seeing fire in this way, although fire is seen, it appears as a nature mixed with consciousness. Therefore, one cannot be certain that this is fire and not water, and thus one cannot know. Although water appears as its own nature, seeking it should not lead to dwelling; not going means not engaging in seeking water. Thus, whatever is said to be water is difficult to overcome suffering. If the nature of that or another, without remainder, unmixed, appears distinctly on the consciousness that is determined separately, then how could this or another appear as the nature of a guide? Because entering and returning contradict each other, they cannot be practiced simultaneously. What is difficult to refute is what is afflicted and will be realized. Here, the opportunity for others to express doubts is if one speaks of seeing one, and so on. He says, I do not speak of merely the reversal of focusing on water, any non-existent nature, because it would become the fault of what was said. However, this unique seeing of fire is different from that, saying that in that one realizes there is no appearance of water, or on consciousness it is said to be another object. The proponent of established tenets says, how does one see one, and so on. He says, can one also realize the absence of another by the power of seeing one? If so, then at the time of seeing that, one will understand that it exists, but how can one be certain that it is not different from that? If one can completely see the unique one such as fire, then by seeing that it is not mixed with water, when it appears separately on the consciousness of fire, then the consciousness of knowing there is no water arises. Thus, like fire, when water also arises from that, then like fire, that will also appear on the consciousness of seeing that. Because their own consciousness is special, it is reasonable that one can appear. Therefore, because one appearance without another is impossible, when the consciousness of the existence of another arises, then there is no consciousness of another object. Such a consciousness arises. If it is said that the other object, also with its own nature that is not mixed with other objects, is the cause of distinguishing that there is no, then the proponent of established tenets

It is said, "This itself," and so on. However, we have already stated with words such as, "If these also exist, it is impossible to ascertain that they are of one entity's essence." Therefore, whatever appears as solely unmixed with others is also without others. Because that very sole entity is of the nature of being without others, or because the aspect of being without others has been refuted. And, because it appears in direct perception, its non-existence is eliminated by its power, and later, terms are applied, that is, the discriminating consciousness that cognizes formlessness arises. If this is not understood, then nothing can be understood. Because the discriminating consciousness of other objects cannot be understood even by the nature of direct perception, but by the arising of the knowledge of non-otherness, the means of cognition of non-existence is not separately established. If that is the case, then one knows its non-existence only by experiencing its emptiness of other appearances. Since discriminating consciousness is also by nature empty of its appearance, it is impossible to know that it is without others by reasoning, because this sole entity is distinguished by discrimination. Therefore, just as when it is ascertained that something is absent in some place, like non-conceptual consciousness, later, by the discriminating consciousness saying, "There is fire here," it is merely the application of terms, and there is no other means of valid cognition separate from that, as previously stated. The knowledge of non-existence is also through the fruit of discrimination, from the direct perception that discriminates other objects, Because there is no separate means of valid cognition that is known as the non-existence of things. Therefore, if you also demonstrate what we have said about understanding non-otherness, why do you show displeasure? Because you do not accept the separate means of valid cognition of non-existence that is spoken of, you are showing ridicule to those who accept it. If that is the case, then you are now saying that you will remain neutral because you are out of options, but if that were not the case, why didn't you say this before? To speak rashly is a source of affliction for oneself and others, so the conclusion is that it is like a bird that has not seen the shore, and so on. For example, if merchants who have boarded a ship release a bird and still see the shore, then what?
