Such statements as "establishment itself is non-establishment" completely destroy views that contradict the mundane. In order to refute the proponents of establishment who say that "something that exists temporarily is itself proof of non-existence," it is said, "because they are not established separately." There is no establishment of the absence of a pot and the various directions separately. However, the absence of a pot is known only through the consciousness that grasps the direction by the nature of being devoid of a pot. Therefore, how can the direction and the pot, which are to be grasped by one consciousness, become the sign and the object possessing the sign? It is said, "because the reason has no connection with the other," these two, the direction and the absence of a pot, have no connection with each other at all. If there is no connection, how can they become the sign and the object possessing the sign? In order to show that very point, it is said, "Something that exists temporarily is," and so on. Something that exists temporarily is not proof of the absence of a pot, and so on. The word "temporarily" is in order to correctly show the sequence, meaning that the refutation of proving the non-existence of a thing by taking the object of an existing thing as its object will be discussed later. If asked, how is it that something that exists temporarily is not proof of the non-existence of a thing? Therefore, it is said, "When something is established, something else is not established, those two are," and so on. When one thing is established, another thing is not established, those two are the sign and the object possessing the sign. Here, the example is like fire and smoke. In some cases, when smoke is established, fire is not established, and in order to establish fire, smoke is considered the sign. In some cases, when smoke is established, fire is also established, then those two are not the sign and the object possessing the sign. Here, when thinking about the direction devoid of a pot, one knows immediately that there is no pot, so how can these two become the sign and the object possessing the sign? If asked, why is this? It is said, "Because it has a nature that is different from that and has no connection," and so on. "That" refers to the direction, which is the other existence. "Because it has a nature that is different from that and has no connection," and so on, refers to the direction, which is different from that and has a compatible nature, such as a pot, and so on.

That which is me is referred to as "other than that." Because this has a nature that is unrelated to other than that, this is one that has a nature that is unrelated to other than that, which is a synonym for "a place devoid of a pot." Because the valid cognition that establishes the suchness of the place of the nature that is unrelated to a pot, by means of which one knows the place devoid of a pot, therefore only the valid cognition that establishes as it is can establish the distinction of other than that of the place, which is a synonym for "knowing the place devoid of a pot." Therefore, since they are not established separately, that other existence is not the establishment of non-existence. In order to explain other reasons, it is said, "That is the sign of that," and so on. If the sign and the sign-possessor are in conjunction, then the sign becomes related to the sign-possessor in some way, for example, the sign of being made and the sign-possessor of impermanence have a relationship of the nature of gathering together in one meaning. Just like that, being made and impermanence are both gathered into one meaning. The relation of these two by the nature of gathering in one meaning is explained in relation to other treatises. According to one's own system, these two are related by its nature. In order to show another relationship, it is said, "Smoke and," and so on. Just as smoke and the signless gather together in one meaning, just like that, smoke and fire both gather in one place. Conjunction is explained here as the meaning of gathering. Others do not admit that in that place the two are related by the nature of gathering, or because smoke is seen on the fire, so the two are related by the nature of support and supported, both of these relationships are also proximately established in relation to other systems. In order to show the relationship of these two according to one's own system, it is said, "Like the object to be produced and the object that produces," and so on. Fire produces smoke. Therefore, the two are related by the nature of cause and effect. Having thus explained the three kinds of relationships, the main text and
