Why is it necessary to rely on the actions of a potter? Why can't it change by itself? This is the thought of a questioner. That is both "that" and a shape, so it is "that shape." The basis of "that" is the basis of "that shape." Because this possesses the nature of the basis of "that shape," this is the one possessing the nature of the basis of "that shape." The word "that" completely grasps the shape that exists on a pot. "Dependent on that" is dependent on that. Because this possesses the nature of being dependent on that, this is the one possessing the nature of being dependent on that. The word "that" is combined with a substance. If the Vaisheshika school suspects the opponent's objection in this way, that is not an answer. After that, it is said "mutually," because whatever the substance called a pot is, and whatever the difference in shapes such as the belly and the large interior is, both of these are obtained from the potter as the possibility of mutual connection, therefore relying on the potter, the connection here is considered to be the characteristic of the basis and existence. If one does not rely on the potter, what fault is there? Therefore, it is not like that, but merely the nature of the thing itself, it is said "even before" and so on. If, in order to make it a possibility of mutual connection, one does not rely on the potter, then at that time, merely the nature of the thing itself, even before, with the substance of clay, the difference in shapes such as the belly and the large interior, the possibility of connection is one, then it would lead to being connected with such a shape, this is the answer to the Vaisheshika school's objection. Here, a proponent of established tenets says: If it is like this, then it is "then the possibility of clay" and so on. If, in order to make it a possibility of mutual connection, one relies on the potter, then it would be "then the possibility of clay is done only by the potter," and these two, clay and possibility, are not different in essence either. If these two are different in essence, then at that time, just like before, it would lead to the possibility being separated from the substance. If one says that possibility is also a quality, so it is established as not being separate, then at that time, that is also the nature of the thing itself, even before, it is connected with
