Because of clinging to meaning, one falls into clinging to what is meaningless. Moreover, when clinging to an imputed meaning, one clings to it as one's own nature. Therefore, the object that this inference enters into is called one's own nature, and the object to be grasped is meaningless. Therefore, here, by showing the object to be grasped by valid cognition, it is shown that the object of direct perception is one's own nature. If one is to understand which object of knowledge is one's own nature, what is it? The answer is: it is said as "meaning." The word "meaning" is a synonym for object. That meaning, among the objects of knowledge, some reside nearby, some reside far away, some are near and some are far. From these, for knowledge, the appearance of the object to be grasped is different in terms of clarity and non-contradiction. An object of knowledge, because it is near, makes the appearance of knowledge appear clearly. If it is not near, residing in a distant object, then it is not clear, and that is its own nature. All things appear unclear from a distance, and clear from a near distance, and that is their own nature. Why is it that only the object of direct perception is one's own nature? Like this, for the object of conceptual thought, fire, is it also determined to be only the nature of what is visible? The answer is: it is said, "That itself is ultimately existent." Ultimate and non-false, that is, the nature of non-superimposition. Therefore, because it exists, it is ultimately existent. Because which meaning makes the appearance clear from near and far, that itself is ultimately existent, and the object of direct perception is also that. Therefore, that alone is its own nature. Again, why is that itself ultimately existent? The answer is: it is said, "Because the nature of a thing is only that which is capable of performing a function." Because it is the meaning to be sought, it is meaning, that is, what is to be abandoned and what is to be taken. What is to be abandoned is what should be abandoned, and what is to be taken is what should be taken. The action required by meaning is accomplishment. Among them, ability is power, that itself is the nature of whatever thing, that nature is the nature capable of performing a function. That thing is meaning itself, therefore. Thing is a synonym for that ultimately existent. That mean

Now, this is because, that which is capable of accomplishing a purpose is said to be truly existent. Even though different cognitive appearances arise from nearness and farness, since it is capable of accomplishing a purpose, it itself is truly existent. Accomplishing a purpose means it is accomplished from the realm of direct perception, while for the realm of conceptual thought, it is determined to be merely an appearance. Even so, that is not seeing, because no purpose can be accomplished from it, while a purpose can be accomplished from seeing. Therefore, that itself is the own-character, not the realm of conceptual thought. Even if it is determined to be the own-character, that is not seeing; whatever is not the own-character is the general character. The object determined by conceptual consciousness does not produce different cognitive appearances from nearness and farness. For example, the fire that needs to be imputed exists as imputed, and after being imputed, it exists in places near and far. That imputed thing does not have different cognitive appearances from nearness and farness. Therefore, it is said to be different from the own-character. Expressing it as generality, the general character is a synonym for the nature of being common. The nature of imputation is the general character of all fires, and to show that it can also be grasped by inference, it is said to be the object of inference, the nature of being grasped. The general character is the nature of inference, and because it is intended to explain this, it is necessary to repeat the discussion of the nature of the own-character. Therefore, in order to reduce complexity, in the case of direct perception, the object of inference is pointed out. In order to eliminate the inverted cognition of the object and to eliminate the inverted cognition of the result, it is said that the direct perception itself, that is, the direct perception just pointed out, is the result of valid cognition ( प्रमाण ,pramāṇa,measure). How is it the result of valid cognition? It is explained as comprehending the meaning, that is, understanding. For the direct perception, whatever has self-nature is the self-nature of comprehending the meaning, because its entity is itself, so it is explained thus: the consciousness that can encounter is valid cognition, and that which is capable of encountering is also
