The so-called "ground" refers to where one can find a semblance of reason if there is something unestablished or if doubt arises. It is because it is established as unestablished or doubtful. How is the combination of what and what appropriate on what? Didn't the master also say that non-conflicting contradiction is also a cause of doubt? The contradiction of reason, whatever is proven, the non-conflicting contradiction is a non-conflicting contradiction. Or, this is also a contradiction, because what is proven contradicts the dharma established by others; and it is also non-conflicting, because one's own to-be-proven contradicts the non-conflicting contradiction, which is non-conflicting for contradiction. Although it is true that one's own to-be-proven is explained, I have not mentioned it here. Why? It is said that inference easily arises from the three aspects established by valid cognition, so that itself is the object of inference. In that case, non-conflicting contradiction is impossible. In the case of the three aspects not established by valid cognition, for whichever aspect is established by valid cognition, that semblance of reason is possible. For whatever aspect is established by valid cognition, there is no non-conflicting contradiction of the aspect established by valid cognition. Therefore, it is impossible, and because it is impossible, it is not mentioned. Why is it impossible? It is said that the effect, or nature, or non-apprehension is mentioned. Because contradiction is impossible, when mentioning the characteristics of the effect and nature, the effect is the very characteristic of arising from a cause. Nature is also the very pervasion by what is to be proven. Whatever is the effect and whatever is the nature, how can they become contradictory? If one abandons the nature of being the cause and the pervader, then when mentioning the characteristic of non-apprehension, the very non-apprehension of appearance is the characteristic of non-apprehension. Since that is also the non-existence of non-conflicting things, contradiction itself is impossible. Or, if one thinks that it will change from something else, then it is said that there is no other non-conflicting thing other than these three. Therefore, they themselves are the cause. Then, where did the master Dignāga speak of this fault of reason? Say

Therefore, since inference arising from the power of things themselves is impossible, one must rely on inference based on scripture, thereby demonstrating the characteristic of non-contradiction. Whatever inference, based on scripture, operates with three modes is reliant on scripture. If one asks, "Is it not established by the valid cognition of the three modes established by scripture?" the answer is: because it arises through the force of unseen things. Seeing things is merely conceptual thought. Its power is its ability. Arising through it is not valid cognition, because merely from conceptual thought, distinguishing from conceptual thought, inferring as the substance of the three modes established by scripture is not valid cognition. Then, for what purpose is the inference of the three modes established by scripture done? For that purpose, it is said, "In the process of examining those meanings." Whatever the meaning of scripture, such as universals, etc., whatever transcends the scope of the senses and is not fully accomplished by direct perception and inference, participating in the examination, that is, the teacher's explanation of the non-contradictory characteristic based on scripture, becomes possible for inference based on scripture. Why is it also possible for inference based on scripture? The answer is: for authors, it reveals the essence of contradicting one's own nature, because establishment is possible, therefore the characteristic of non-contradiction is possible. "Confusion" means reversal. Because of reversal, authors impose non-existent essences upon it. If the author is also confused, then what can be trusted for other individuals? The answer is: it is said, "Things as they are." Because reasons are not established as reasons through cognition, but are established through their own inherent existence. Therefore, things existing as they are is impossible for self, result, and non-perception, because existence is ultimate existence. Things are existent. Whatever establishment exists as things are, those are the ones that exist as things are. Those are established as they exist, not through cognition.
