What is called "life" is what worldly people call "life force." Since it is not appropriate to discuss its establishment from the scriptures here, the essence of life force is called "life" here. That which is the characteristic of ceasing and disappearing, that alone is what is referred to as that. Such death is accepted by Buddhists. Although it is indeed so, if asked why it is not established, it is said: Because the nature of the cessation of consciousness and so on is not possible in trees and so on. Cessation is the prior existence that has passed away. Therefore, how can one who believes that consciousness ceases in trees not believe that consciousness does not exist? Therefore, if one does not believe that consciousness exists in trees, then one does not believe that it ceases either. If it is asked whether dryness is also called death, and whether it is not established in trees, the answer is: It is true. However, whatever death is pervaded by the existence of consciousness is taken as the reason here, and what is pervaded by its existence is the cessation of consciousness, not just dryness. Therefore, whatever death is the reason is not established in trees, and whatever death is established as the nature of dryness is not the reason. The naked ascetics assert death as the reason without examining whether the death to be proven is pervasive or non-pervasive. Therefore, this opponent does not understand the death that is the reason, and because he does not understand, it is established, because he sees the death of the nature of dryness in trees. Because the opponent knows, it is not established. It is reasonable to say that when the opponent also knows, it will also become unestablished for the opponent. Establishing the absence of mind in pleasure and so on, "pleasure and so on" refers to suffering and so on, beginning with pleasure; those are pleasure and so on. Those are to be established as without mind; whatever is produced or impermanent is therefore without mind. Whatever is produced or impermanent is without mind, like form and so on. Similarly, pleasure and so on are also produced or impermanent, therefore they are without mind. Sentient beings are the essence of individuals. Here too, it is only what is produced and impermanent.

Because this is the way of reasoning, not something that is done all at once. Both of these are not established in the opponent of the Samkhya school. The one who speaks of reasoning for the sake of others, states as reasoning that which is established in others. For others, the arising from nothing and the impermanence of the complete destruction of existing things are established. But similarly, both of these are not established in the Samkhyas. Here, because the way of establishing impermanence and arising is not understood, it is not established in the opponent. If the opponent also understands the measure of impermanence and arising, then it will also be established in the opponent. Therefore, because the measure is not fully understood, this is not established in the opponent. If there is doubt, in order to show that it is not established, it is said in that way, "Is it the nature itself?" If there is doubt about the nature of the reasoning, then it is not established. The so-called "its basis" is the basis of that reasoning. Because the reasoning depends on this, it is the basis. Other than the reasoning, the basis is the subject to be proven. The reasoning exists on it, existing in a way that makes it understood. Doubting that basis is hesitating. In order to show the example of doubting the nature, it is said, "For example." Whatever steam is produced first, that is steam and so on. Doubting that thing, that is, the steam itself and so on. The so-called "collection of elements" is the collection of earth and other elements gathered together. The so-called "in order to establish fire" is that if it is held in order to establish fire, then it is not established. Here it is shown that when the smoke also becomes doubtful as steam and so on, then it is not established, because the nature that makes it understood is not certain. Certainty as smoke is because it is produced by fire, so it will become understandable. When there is doubt, because it is not understandable, there is the fault of not being established. The so-called "for example" is an example of the basis not being established. The so-called "in this mountain valley" is the subject. "In the mountain valley at the intersection of high mountains, there is a peacock," this is what is to be proven.
