Sound arises from agents. The part that produces transforms into an exhausted state, while the remaining part floats. The ability to generate visible sound, pervading all places, possessing power, together with the striking agent, transforming into the opposite state, the proximate cause, sound arises from that. Some say that the striking substances, because it is observed that they slightly diminish at the end of time, therefore infer that they return, sound arises from that. But this is not entirely correct, because for those things that arise gradually, such as encountering adolescence, and the sound produced by leaves struck by the wind, no diminution is perceived in them, therefore the former statement is reasonable. Others think that the striking agent pervading the sky, transforming into subtle sound, is the proximate cause. But there is no reason for its existence, therefore it is unreasonable, so the former statement is without fault. Milk also has two components, milk and water. For example, the cream or essence part on top of yogurt is the source of butter. Or it is the essence of milk and the component of milk. Among them, the water component becomes whey. Similarly, yogurt transforms into butter and non-butter components, which is also because the causes of the substances are different. Butter transforms into essence and non-essence, also for the same reason. Gold ore transforms into slag and the component of matter, also in the same way, and others can be understood in this way. Furthermore, the nature that is able to include all the differences of the result that are especially to be proven through production, that from which it arises is the proximate cause. For example, all the beneficial natures such as the object of eye consciousness are the nature of mind. Because it arises from the immediately preceding cause, like the proximate cause. If someone says, what is the meaning of the proximate cause for individual abilities? To this it should be said that for those things that are understood as one in the same way, and have the same function, it must be determined that they are the entities of cause and effect.

Yes, it is impossible to determine that something is a cause and effect in just a moment, because whether seen from this side or from others, one cannot understand what follows and what is contrary to it. Because, the cause and effect of things that have a gathering realm are not the realm of things, and when the only gathering is prevented, it is impossible for the gathered things to be prevented as well. For the cause and effect of things that have a gathering realm, as mentioned before, the proximate cause that has become the opposite dharma is reasonably the difference in the nature of producing. If it is said that "the only proximate cause is not established," then it should also be proved in this way, just as when the continuum of the object does not change, happiness and so on arise, that is not the proximate cause. It is also not that one part of the object changes, because it is not seen. This is also unreasonable, because happiness and suffering, with the same object as the cause, arise in different continuums. It is also not the sense faculty, because if the sense faculty changes, the eye consciousness will not arise later. It is also not one part, because the result of that would lead to the transformation of consciousness. Therefore, when the remaining consciousness transforms into the opposite dharma, happiness and so on arise, so that is the proximate cause. In order to prove this, the teacher has attributed all the sense faculties and so on to the characteristics of the cause. If the continuum of the sense faculties and objects does not change, and happiness and so on arise, then what is it that changes in the continuum, and how is it established as the proximate cause? There are two characteristics of the proximate cause. Because happiness and so on are the same as consciousness and the proximate cause, when the nature of mind is established, happiness and so on themselves are established as consciousness, because it will be explained that the nature of experience is just this one. Different from the way of acting together, different results arise from different proximate causes, so different causes arise only from different proximate causes, while differences arise from things that act together. Therefore, in everything, the main factor that makes them different is the different proximate causes.
