A Commentary on Determining Valid Cognition. Dharmottara. A Commentary on Determining Valid Cognition. Dharmottara. In Sanskrit: Pramāṇaviniścayaṭīkā. In Tibetan: A Commentary on Determining Valid Cognition. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī. Whoever, though having abandoned attachment, is subject to the power of others, striving for the benefit of the noble all-accomplishing; whoever, though having exhausted afflictions, strives without interruption to prevent various thoughts; whoever, though having abandoned the view of self, has also thoroughly understood the very nature of self; may that teacher, with the power of mind, scripture, and reason, conquer and destroy evil doctrines. Whoever, when he rises, makes stars such as the Pleiades insignificant; even when manifest, he causes all observations of the realm of objects to decline; constantly striving to observe, dispelling dimness, and giving rise to the sight of true objects; Dharmakīrti, the invincible, is like the light of the sun and moon. The commentaries and explanations made by others, I see as contradicting his views. From the oral instructions of the lama, however many words there may be, I will only analyze the objects. Because of the fear of being too verbose, I will not quote the words of others. Because I want to abandon the evil path, I will not return to it again. Why is it that great beings have made commentaries? Therefore, I too should strive. Just as a garuda flies in the sky, So too does one teach a fledgling before it is mature. If someone, because I am self-knowing, speaks reproachfully, I do not mind; this composition is also for the sake of their understanding. There is also this saying in the world, that being many and famous is good, But if one understands that it is emptiness, then it is a place to be reproached. Jealousy also follows views, so it is stable, And it pervades even harmless and examinable things, Poison also increases from the milk of good speech that destroys it, I see that one who possesses this is the poison of the eye. If one wishes to explain true knowledge, then in order to generate respect for the difference between the proponent and the subject to be proven, in the debate, answers, and explanations of the Compendium on Valid Cognition, it is made manifest.

Wouldn't it become an accusation that you haven't explained valid cognition? Why are you commenting on the *Pramāṇaviniścaya*? To this challenge and contemplation, the teacher explains the reason for commenting on the *Pramāṇaviniścaya* with "To whom," etc. The compassion that desires to liberate from suffering and the cause of suffering is love. Because this love becomes the cause, I will explain the treatise that is embraced by the noble ones, and I will comment on its sutra. Because the nature of the result is desire, and what I desire is also that beings be free from suffering. Therefore, just as right knowledge is taught in order to abandon the cause of suffering arising from perverse consciousness, so too, in order to liberate from the cause of suffering of reviling the teacher of the world, I will explain this treatise. If the *Pramāṇaviniścaya* is interpreted arbitrarily, then ignorant people will revile the teacher, saying, "Dignāga does not understand logic." And this is both closeness and service, and it is the world, making it grow, being in a state of growth. For the act of approaching, also because of the approach, it is the very one who causes growth. Because the Bodhisattva has causeless love, even if he does not seek the benefit of the world, he serves the world through generosity and so on, and makes it qualified to benefit from liberation, thereby causing it to grow. Even a slight slander of the great being who engages in the benefit of others is a cause of suffering, what need is there to mention great slander? This is what is said to give rise to non-meaning from this. Due to ignorance, that is, not understanding, they fabricate and slander. Since meaning can be determined from the *Pramāṇaviniścaya*, isn't it possible to understand even without explaining the *Compendium of Valid Cognition*? If someone asks, where is the opportunity for universal ignorance? Then the teacher spoke the words "world," etc., in which clarity is certainty. The world is foolish wisdom, that is, inferior wisdom. The meaning embraced by the noble ones is the very meaning that is clearly intended to be declared in the sutra of the *Compendium of Valid Cognition*, and the world does not understand this treatise. Because the sentences are difficult to connect.
