It is not, because the meaning is not hidden. Just like understanding the shapes of pearls and silver, etc. Similarly, understanding smoke as the result of fire, knowing its connection to fire without seeing the fire, is also not inference. The statement that anything to be inferred does not go beyond the scope refers to the consciousness that has not been experienced in one's own and others' continuums. Because it is said that it is not understood from the experienced object. Also, the statement in the Pramāṇavārttika, "Doubt arises from similar aspects," refers to the consciousness of the object that causes doubt, not to all situations. Some determine from other things that if it does not exist, it will not arise. If one doubts what does not arise without it, it will not become a valid cognition because the meaning is uncertain. Just as determining (inference) is valid cognition by seeing what does not arise without inference. The direct perception itself is not established by determining that it does not arise without itself, but by determining the appearance. Realizing the meaning is valid cognition, and it is the act of leading into (the meaning) itself, not others. The act of leading in is also said to be the act of pointing out the object of entry. Therefore, determining the appearance is teaching, so for the object of entry, the function of valid cognition is complete. Any determination of aspects that contradict the appearance and cause harm is not valid cognition because the function of valid cognition is not complete. For example, like the consciousness that grasps a mirage, entering because it is determined to be water. Doubting what does not arise without it never harms the function of direct perception. For some objects that are clung to as existing, such as "Is this fire true or not?" Doubting what does not arise without it, for these, everything in itself is valid cognition from other aspects. Also, for some general concepts with characteristics such as leaves, doubting the specific object, such as "Is this a birch or a sandalwood tree?" For these, the general is from itself, and the specific is from others. Because direct perception grasps the functional object and determines it to be a tree, and it is functional.

Capacity is also a distinction. Therefore, the nature of a tree that has become an object of entry is the distinction itself. Therefore, that which causes entry into it is that itself. If the distinction of the tree's own wood does not exist, then it is certain that it will not arise, and this is from another source. Just as the tree itself, which exists in common, functions only with the nature of distinction, so too, the momentary instants that are common, such as blue, also function with the nature of blue and so forth. Then, if the momentary instant is not apprehended by direct perception, then the ultimate of blue and so forth becomes a valid cognition for it, because blue and so forth themselves perform the function. Apprehending the distinction, when one sees blue and so forth functioning, the ultimate of that which is not certain, such as the momentary instant that exists in common, is not a valid cognition, because the functioning is completed only by the visible object and so forth. Therefore, from grasping that which functions by the nature of the general characteristic, up to the ultimate of the distinction, that itself is a valid cognition, and it must be ascertained from another source. Even when apprehending the distinction, if the general characteristic is ascertained by the power of individual appearances, then that is a valid cognition, just as when apprehending the wood of a tree for the tree itself. Otherwise, it is not a valid cognition. The momentary instant itself is not such a distinction, nor is it ascertained from the appearance of a distinction. Therefore, such a thing is established only by another valid cognition. Similarly, one should also consider the different tactile sensations and so forth that occur together. Ascertainment is not possible solely from the knowledge of functioning, but it is also possible from seeing certain things that do not arise if they do not exist. All doubts of this kind arise after the nature of appearance has been ascertained. If it is not ascertained, then it is not appropriate to grasp that object. Therefore, doubt arises after the object of direct perception has been ascertained. The *Pramanavarttika* says, "What is apprehended and not apprehended by direct perception depends on the power of appearance." Appearance is also ascertained in the same way as its own ascertained nature. Therefore, doubt about what does not arise if it does not exist arises from outside and does not obstruct the object of direct perception. For that very reason, what is experienced from oneself in accordance with reality is certain.
