If it is said that the self-nature of "not arising without," then direct perception itself is a valid cognition. From other aspects, it is merely eliminating later arising doubts. Like this, any later consciousness does not hold the previous consciousness. It is also not a sign, because merely its arising can eliminate doubt, and there is no recollection of pervasion. Otherwise, because later consciousness infers the clarity of the experienced object as a valid cognition, it would be said "except for experiencing the object." Therefore, the certainty of appearance is the completion of the function of direct perception. Conceptualization does not establish the object by means of appearance, but by means of certainty. The Pramāṇavārttika says: "By what certainties, one knows the uncertain." Among them, all conceptualizations without a sign, because there is no determiner, cannot prevent other doubts, so they are hesitant. That is also clinging to the uncertain as meaningful, but because there is no such meaning, it is not able to be obtained. What arises from a sign is to definitely show one of the things or non-things, and that is also able to be obtained, therefore, the function of the valid cognition of conceptualization is to show the meaning that can be obtained from seeing "not arising without," and the function of direct perception is to make the appearance certain. Doubt is not contrary to its function, but is an addition. As the Pramāṇavārttika says: "If by the cause of confusion, one does not make another kind of merit combine." Therefore, what is said "the unaccustomed is entering into non-valid cognition" is irrelevant, it should be said "from uncertain as a valid cognition." In any place where one becomes a valid cognition from another and enters, there is no fault of the two mutually indicating, because one can also enter from doubt. If it is said that from not deceiving the near object, one determines that the sense faculty is without defect, therefore, only what is determined as a valid cognition can enter, that is not correct, because even at the time of appearing as two moons, one will not deceive the sky without stain, etc., because it is confusion about the certainty of the object. If the world...

Inference that follows benefit is itself valid cognition, and to explain that there is no difference in valid cognition even for those who assert external objects and consciousness-only, it is said, "These have completely determined the meaning." Both of those statements are unrelated, because the circumstances of the worldly Lokayata and the consciousness-only school will be explained later. Not everything that is slightly explained in this treatise should be applied to the consciousness-only school, because in terms of the power of meaning, "because it is a true arising," etc., is inconsistent with the view of the consciousness-only school. Because it is intolerable to fix the number as two, it is said, "If," that is, they also acknowledge valid cognitions other than direct perception and inference. The knowledge generated by sound, which has a hidden meaning as its object, is valid cognition of sound, that is, "For an object that is not an object of direct perception, whatever knowledge arises from sound." The complete determination of similarity to hidden things is also approximate measurement, for example, from seeing a yak, one thinks that this creature is similar to a yak, and thus has a similar understanding of the hidden yak. By mentioning "etc.," it also includes understanding through meaning and non-existent things. These sounds, etc., are valid cognitions because they can be measured and understood, so from where does this certainty come? It is said "valid cognition," we do not argue about the names of sound or approximate measurement. Among these, what is valid cognition is included in these two alone, and whatever is not included in them is not valid cognition, therefore there are only two valid cognitions. Just as a non-deceiver who enables one to obtain the indicated meaning is called valid cognition, so too, knowledge that enables one to obtain the indicated meaning, non-deception is valid cognition. Correct knowledge also refers to non-deception, therefore there is no difference, so in the case of correct knowledge, it is said to be valid cognition. If it is other, it is not valid cognition, and if it is valid cognition, it is not other, this is the established vow. Obtaining something that completely determines the nature of what is to be measured is called valid cognition, and what is to be measured is also the object of valid cognition, therefore valid cognition has an object and
