This is said for the purpose of summarizing ordinary content. Therefore, because of the reason that it cannot be expressed by symbols, the self-awareness of happiness and so on is indeed awareness. Expression is the sound of speaking, but it is not famous in other treatises, as it is said: The sound together with meaning is expression. That is the appearance related to it. Where does it exist? It is there, but awareness is not like that. When explaining that kind of connection, saying "because it cannot be expressed by symbols," this is the connection of the word "because." Therefore, combination is, with what to speak, with what to express, if it is not combined with certainty by symbols, then it is not grasped specially by that, for example, like using the sound of a cow to refer to a horse. The self-nature of happiness and so on is also not expressed by all sounds, not combined with certainty by symbols, this is without pervasiveness. Like this, because with the appearance and disappearance of symbols, grasping the particularity of sound is not one's own nature, therefore, because the grasping of symbols is universal, the relationship is established, it has been determined many times. For what and what is unrelated to expression, it is said this. Those with knowledge say, because this can recognize, so where does the self-nature of awareness exist, those are not like that. Saying this, if one recognizes others, then naturally one will recognize oneself, these are not the self-nature of awareness, saying this. Then, how are tranquility and so on recognized? It is answered that it is recognized by other knowledge. Therefore, like a vase and so on, it is grasped, but it is not the grasper. If those, like a vase and so on, appear as external self-nature, that is unreasonable. That is unreasonable, because for oneself, happiness and so on and knowledge gather on one self-nature, therefore it appears as without difference. In order to show this, knowledge is specially explained, one is also that, and meaning is also that, there, what is the state of connection, that is that knowledge. Those, that is to say, are the differentiators.

It is indeed related. Because they distinguish those things, they are related to their own nature. Therefore, things related to the nature of that and not that are theirs, thereby showing the relationship by relying on related things. The so-called "that" refers to the sprout of rice. The so-called "not that" refers to the sprout of barley. The nature of that and not that is the sprout of rice and the sprout of barley. Those that have these are those that have the nature of that and not that. It is said that another sprout of rice is the same in nature as one sprout of rice. Similarly, another sprout of barley, which is different in nature from one sprout of rice, is said to be of a nature that is not that. Different from one sprout of rice, from the perspective of similarity, the sprout of rice has a nature, while the sprout of barley has no nature. That and not that is that which is not that. Whatever their nature is, those are the things that are that which is not that, such as the sprout of rice and the sprout of barley. Their causes are the seeds of rice and barley, and so on. What arises from them arises from the cause of that which is not that. Whatever is the cause of one thing's nature, what arises from something similar to it arises from its cause. Similarly, it should also be applied to what is not its nature. The meaning of this is that because their things are also certainly born from the cause of the nature of that and not that, they are considered to be the nature of that and not that. Therefore, the so-called "therefore" is because of that. Why are happiness and so on, that is, why are they not understood through cause? It is not the nature of mind. Because whatever is produced by a cause that is inseparable from consciousness should be the nature of mind, just as distinguishing their things, that is his thought. Explaining the meaning of the verses. The so-called "they also" refers to those who are knowledgeable. The so-called "that and not that" refers to that and not that, that is, the sprout of rice and the sprout of barley. They themselves
