If cognition arises from the eye, then one should ask, what kind of cognition that does not arise from the eye is like? Regarding that object, why is it that the sense power capable of generating cognition, with the same continuum, in the same instant, is the cause of generating some cognitions that grasp that object, but not the cause of others? Because there is no difference, it would become the cause of both, or there would be no difference. Therefore, mental direct perception is not the function of the eye, but abides in something else. After explaining mental direct perception, in order to explain self-awareness direct perception, it is said, "pleasure, etc." Pleasure, etc., refers to suffering, etc. Because one's own self is able to know, it is knowledge, it is said to be knowable, and that is direct perception. The explanation of this is that pleasure, etc., are also like that, arranging the order elsewhere. The meaning of the word "also" is that what was said before is also direct perception, and whatever nature of pleasure, etc., is truly knowable, that is also the measure of direct perception. Oneself is the object to be measured, and the grasping that is able to completely eliminate that is the measure of direct perception. Are all minds and mental factors not self-awareness direct perception? Why only approach pleasure, etc.? It is explained that saying pleasure, etc., is to show that it is both clear and experienced, and it exists in the meaning of what is to be proven. Because if the clear experience without dispute is shown, then the understanding that others also experience will follow. Truly knowing pleasure, etc., is clarity, and it should be regarded as the treatise of Acharya Dignāga saying this. Again, why is it only slightly shown here, and not completely grasping this object? It is explained that because the nature of all knowledge, cognition, that is direct perception. Again, how is that not direct perception? It is said, "pleasure, etc.," because pleasure, etc., are the nature of cognition.

That is, to discriminate the nature that can be known, and discrimination is to hold on to it by mixing it with sound. That is not existence. In this way, holding one's own nature is real, because oneself is not hidden from self-awareness. To know oneself is also to be free from delusion and without discrimination. Why is there no discrimination? It is explained: Because the nature of happiness, etc., cannot be expressed for anything, therefore there is no discrimination for it. Why can't it be expressed? Because, the so-called "because" is because their nature does not depend on others, so it cannot be expressed. In this way, whatever is grasped by self-awareness, the nature of a moment, is uncommon. The establishment of sound is also based on the object being made, with the intention of expression as the guide. If a moment has a sequence, as the object being made, the intention of expression and the establishment are impossible. Therefore, it is taken as the object in the unproduced state. When it is produced after the sound is established with the intention of expression as the guide, if it is considered to be holding the difference of sound, this method is also impossible. Because, is it that the consciousness itself establishes the sound on itself, or is it by another consciousness? If it is the consciousness itself, then when the sound is established, is it produced or unproduced? For the time being, it is impossible to establish it for the unproduced, because the unproduced is the unmanifested. Even if it is unproduced, it is specially said to be individual determination because it is taken as the general object. The nature of happiness, etc., is not taken as the object, but the self-awareness of the object-possessor. Here, to establish things, with the sound of consciousness, it is not to hold the nature that can be known as valid, nor is it the nature of the fruit, because there is no validity for it. Why is it not taken as the object? It is explained: That self-awareness is happiness, etc., and the nature of its nature is itself. Because this self-awareness is the nature of happiness, etc., and is its own essence, if it is not established, then it is not established, therefore when the nature of happiness, etc., is not produced, both the object and the object-possessor do not exist.
