The so-called "is" refers to accepting the two experiences of what came before and what comes after without distinction, just as before. Its power is to establish and awaken the mental activity of memory, which holds the object to be experienced. From that power, memory arises through the establishment of mental activity. The function of memory is to connect the experience of the special fruit's action with what is seen in the present, making them one. That is, memory arises from direct perception, connecting the subject who sees the accomplishment of the special fruit with the two experiences of "this is it." Similarly, memory also connects the thing that was previously experienced, which accomplishes the special fruit, with that thing, even though it is accompanied by conceptual thought. However, from the direct perception that begins with "this," there is no function of memory of previous experience. However, it is merely awakening the habitual tendencies produced by previous experience. There is no difference for non-conceptual thought either. From that memory that connects as a special action, desire also arises. In order to indicate the object of desire, it is said that upon seeing the proximity that has become the object of direct perception in the past, desire arises for those fruits that are seen. In verse, this is also indicated as the object of desire. The cause of desire is memory. The meaning is that whenever something is seen to be acting, memory connects it. As soon as it is connected, desire and aversion arise for those things. Aversion refers to thinking that the cause of suffering should be completely abandoned. From desire and aversion, speech also arises. The view of the Sutra School is that for the objects of both direct perceptions, memory has made them the object of producing happiness, and the continuum of memory and so on, with speech as an interval, is no different for both. If direct perception has no function, then it will be experienced as such.

Then, how does it become the cause of memory? To show the order, it is said: The nature of things is the dharma of things. This means: This is the very nature of experience, and there is no need for any reason for this. This means: It is established by seeing the result, because it is not without cause, nor is the cause uncertain, so what is the use of reason for this? Also, what is that? It is said: From clearly experiencing, that is, most clearly. This says this: Merely experiencing itself does not leave the ability of memory, but clearly experiencing produces the ability of memory. Leaving the seed that can produce memory, that is, leaving the seed of memory, that is the dharma of clear experience. For the time being, the habit and the subsequent connection that arise from the power of experience exist. The experience that occurs at the time of cause and effect, the meaning of what kind of result is related to, the habit of producing memory, from seeing things similar to it, this seed of memory is awakened, because it is in accordance with producing memory. From the awakening of memory, the habit that can produce the desire to manifest is left, and it tends to manifest in order to produce the result. If it is said that the awakening from the seed is memory, and not the habit of manifesting desire? The time of memory is the time when the habit of manifesting desire is awakened, and memory itself is the nature of the awakened habit, that is its meaning. From the awakening of the habit of manifesting desire, there is also entry, that is, complete entry. If it is said that entry does not arise from the manifestation of desire itself? The manifestation of desire also enters because it precedes all entries, and that is also entry from the habit of manifesting desire, so there is no contradiction. Therefore, like this, the entry of both perceptions is also interrupted by the function of memory that arises after perception, and because it takes things that are determined separately by object, time, and form as the object of entry, perception itself enters.
