So, what do conforming and opposing do? Whatever is said that does not conform or oppose is not its cause. Only conforming and opposing are the cause of some things, but not merely appearance itself. Therefore, the thing that is the cause of appearance is related to appearance; because of clinging to self-nature, it is not related. Because when clinging to appearances such as dizziness, and to the appearances of conceptual thoughts such as the past, as the nature of hair etc., and the nature of the past etc., in that way, the appearance that clings manifestly, then the relation to that appearance, or what will become the function of hair etc. and the past etc., does not exist at all. Therefore, merely because of appearance, things are not causes; however, merely because of cause, it is appearance. Because it depends on appearance itself to become a cause, but it does not depend on cause itself to become appearance. Therefore, for things that do not conform or oppose, it is not established to say that some things become the cause of some things in other ways. Because for consciousness, whatever appearance there is is the object, and also merely being related to appearance also comes from being a cause, therefore what is not a cause will not become an object. Therefore, even if a thing is not a cause, it becomes an object of consciousness because it appears, what is said is clear, because without conforming and opposing, this appearance itself is unreasonable. Therefore, even if a thing exists and arises, but appearance does not depend on conforming and opposing the thing, the consciousness arising from sound is not clinging to its self-nature. Even if it is not appearance itself, it should be observed that it is no different from a non-existent appearance, but comes from this appearance itself. Therefore, from conforming and opposing it, it will become its appearance itself, and also because of that appearance itself, it will become object and subject, so it is said.

remains. Therefore, if a certain knowledge does not follow after something, nor does it follow after the cessation of something, then it is not an appearance of that thing. For example, just as visual consciousness is not an appearance of taste. To say that knowledge arising from sound also does not follow after the object to be cognized by the senses, nor does it follow after its cessation, is the non-observation of the pervasive. For the appearance of a definite entity, it is invariably pervaded by having a cause. Even if there is no following after going and following after cessation, it would become without a cause, because other causes are not reasonable. Therefore, since the pervasive is not observed, when the appearance of a definite entity with a cause itself reverts from other phenomena, the relationship is established because it is pervaded only by following after that entity. Therefore, in this way, even when an entity exists, it is established that knowledge arising from sound is not an appearance. Whether the entity exists or not, it is said in order to conclude that discriminations arising from sound are not objects of entities: because the object is the cause, and the object of the senses is not the cause of discriminations arising from sound, therefore, not relying on entities, whatever discriminations arise from sound are not objects of entities. Therefore, it is established that the knowledge of sound appears as other, and from that, it is also appropriate to know that the knowledge of the senses is inexpressible. In this way, non-discrimination is also established. In the Pramāṇavārttika, the reason for establishing non-discrimination is presented here as svatantra. In order to show the establishment of non-discrimination, and other reasons for inexpressible objects in a common way, "sound combination" etc. are mentioned. Sound combination is to show the meaning seen at the time of convention, in order to be understood, for the sake of being understood, that is, for the necessity of understanding the meaning. Also, the word "also" is to include what is not following after what will be explained. The necessity of combination, that word "also" is definitely established as preceding. Without definite establishment, mere combination is not necessary.
