That which, in a consciousness with a cause, does not appear mixed with sound, that is not the meaning expressed by sound. Whatever is the meaning of a sound, it appears in the mind in relation to it. For example, the long shape of a cow appears mixed with the sound of a cow. For the reason for what is to be expressed is limited to this. Whatever sound does not appear in the mind itself, that is not its meaning. For example, a horse does not appear mixed with the sound of a cow. The aspect of the meaning to be cognized by sensory consciousness also does not appear mixed with sound in the consciousness of sound. Therefore, it is not the meaning of sound. If the appearance and the meaning of sound are clear and unclear, even so, when the meaning related to sound appears, is it not clinging to the nature of what is seen? For example, for cognizers located near and far, although it appears as clear and unclear to consciousness, the object to be viewed is not different. Similarly, here too, for the same object, consciousness appears as clear and unclear. Therefore, how the object of sound is clung to, if it is the nature of appearance, then it is not established that it does not appear together with sound. If the meaning clung to is not true, even so, it is necessary to state the cause that harms the manifest clinging to the experience itself. For without a cause of harm, it is not possible to cling manifestly to the experience. To this doubt, it is said, "The object of sound itself is." The object of sound is that which, from the expression of sound, appears as a meaning mixed with sound. That itself is not a thing, that is to say, it is not capable of functioning. If the object of sound is how, if it is the nature of what is seen, then it becomes a thing, because what is seen is a thing. The object of sound is not a thing. Why? It is explained, that thing, for the seeing that arises from the senses, because the appearance arising from sound is unclear, it appears clearly different from another appearance, because it is clear. The clear appearance that appears in sensory consciousness, it is functional, but not the appearance arising from sound. Therefore, this is

Although it is not a thing, it is the object of the senses. However, the clear appearance of the sense object is a thing, and the unclear appearance of the object arising from sound is considered a thing, even so, if one clings to non-difference, why is it not one? Because it is said "not that," merely the difference in appearance distinguished by the contradictory dharmas of having and not having the ability to function is the reason for what is not that. That is its own nature, that is, being together with it. Absence by that is non-that, negating some is non-that, but not difference itself. For two things, it is from the difference in appearance that follows the ability that they become different, but not for one thing itself. For example, when a vase appears to be different from a rabbit's horn, the vase itself is not a rabbit's horn, thus it becomes without oneness, but merely by this, the rabbit's horn is not different from the vase. Difference arises from the cause of merely possessing contradictory dharmas, and having and not having ability are also contradictory dharmas, and these also exist in the sense of clear and unclear, therefore, the cause of the name of non-one, that is, possessing contradictory dharmas, is detrimental to clinging to oneness. Also, where only the appearance is different, there it will not become without oneness, however, it is on the difference in appearance itself that has the distinction of having and not having the ability to function. In this way, the very existence of things arises from the ability to function, and existence itself is that, and existence is also non-that. Appearance is the nature of knowledge, but it is not a thing, and from its existence it is not necessarily the existence of a thing, like the appearance of confused knowledge. Similarly, by becoming like that, a thing will not become other, because the dharma of knowledge does not become different from some other cause, even if it is not different, it will become different, this is what is said in the *Vartika*. Then, how should one state the reason for the difference in appearance? Because the individually determined ability in the nature of things is apprehended as the ultimate of appearance.
