Since the consciousness of the ear faculty arises from the power of the object, sound does not appear. Then, why is it said to be non-conceptual? It is true. Even so, the consciousness of hearing does not apprehend what kind of sound is apprehended that makes consciousness become conceptual, nor is it produced by such a sound. When apprehending a sound related to what is to be said, the apprehending one becomes a conceptual consciousness, because the state of something being connected to another thing is a connection, therefore it is called conceptual. Therefore, apprehending mutually related things themselves is conceptual. Merely apprehending multiple aspects of one thing is not apprehending the connection itself. For example, although things such as a vase and cloth appear in the same consciousness, they are not apprehended by connecting them. Furthermore, apprehending as something to be distinguished and as a distinguishing thing is not apprehending by connecting them. Therefore, all consciousnesses themselves do not apprehend by connecting other things, so in themselves they are non-conceptual. When apprehending things, connecting some things to apprehend, that is conceptual, while others are non-conceptual. Therefore, any consciousness that connects things from sound and apprehends it as something expressible, that itself is conceptual. A sound related to a thing must also be indicative, therefore, when what is seen at the time of indication is apprehended as "this is it," that is, when it is apprehended as something previously seen, sound will be apprehended as related to the thing, otherwise it is not. What was previously seen is also the object of the consciousness that arose previously, and it has also passed away together with the previous consciousness, and it no longer exists later. A sound that exists by nature is a producer, and direct perception also has an object that exists by nature. Therefore, consciousness is not produced by the object of indication as something to be said, and it does not appear, so ear consciousness is produced by the power of things and only appears as things. Therefore, even if sound does not appear as a thing in the wisdom of a yogi, it is still non-conceptual, because...

Because it is not produced by the object of previous knowledge, nor is it such an appearance. Because it has passed away at that time and is no more. Therefore, if sound expresses its own nature, even so, in the manner of expression, it is a part that is produced or apprehended by something. Therefore, the consciousness of the ear, the consciousness of the yogi, and all the direct perceptions of the mind consciousness, although they all grasp sound, are not produced in the previous consciousness in the manner of expressing the object, nor do they possess such an aspect, therefore it is said to arise from the power of the object and only appear as such. Therefore, because it does not depend on sound, it is without discrimination. Direct perception arising from the senses, with other objects as its object, is not always the producer and object of sound, therefore it is itself non-discriminating. Therefore, the aspect of sound and other direct perceptions are not produced by the nature of expressing the cause of discrimination, and there is no difference from not appearing. Here, because the appointer of names combines the appearance as something to be distinguished, and emphasizes that sound only expresses its own nature, therefore it is promised that it only expresses its own nature, and because it is separated from that aspect, it is established that direct perception is non-discriminating. Some people think that expression is the general characteristic of sound, and that it does not appear in the consciousness of the senses. According to those people, saying "for there is no function of the senses" etc., and this occasion of establishing non-discrimination are no different, because it is established that it is non-discriminating through the way of expressing the object. Furthermore, here, because the letters do not have such a meaning, it will be said that the letters do not appear as the meaning of the letters. If the cause of appearance is produced from the object, then because the appearance is certain, it is non-discriminating. Then, what else would become discriminating? If it is a consciousness of uncertain appearance, what is it? It is said to be discriminating. The word "ni" is to specifically show the difference between the consciousness of the mind and direct perception. That very difference.
