Therefore, the sound that is capable of acting is determined by valid cognition (pramāṇa) as having abandoned the nature of things. If things are also determined as abandoning the nature of sound, then how can it deceive itself while being determined by valid cognition? Therefore, sounds do not exist in its domain, nor are they its nature. Then, by what means, in the manner of existing in its domain and being its nature, do they follow the appearance and disappearance of sound like things? When things appear as their own fruit, those things also appear because they become the cause. There is neither its nature nor existence in its domain, nor is it another way of following appearance and disappearance, therefore, since it is not born by its power, it does not appear at all. If some phenomena of knowledge are dependent on external objects, such as the appearance of blue, etc. Some are the opposite of that, such as the nature of realization, isn't it? The appearance of things is occasional, therefore it is related to the external object, and the nature of realization is not dependent on the external object, therefore it is related to its own immediate cause, just like that. The appearance of sound depends only on its own immediate cause. Therefore, since it follows all knowledge, the appearance of the external object will not arise if it does not exist, and this phenomenon of knowledge called the aspect of sound arises only from the immediate cause even without being close to it, therefore pervasion (vyāpa) is not established, so think of the doubt. It said, "The phenomenon of wisdom," and so on. Wisdom, that is, the phenomenon of knowledge, called the aspect of sound, is not something that the external object has not done, however, it should be admitted that this is done by the external object. Touch is holding the substance of the cause. Whoever has it has touch. Not having touch is not having touch. On things, it means that it is not a phenomenon that does not touch things. Where does this come from? The appearance of sound, definitely combined with things, is definitely related, and obtaining the state of existing in it, means appearing as its nature. It is said like this, because of what?

Regarding the appearance of sound appearing in consciousness, if it is recognized as the meaning of an external object and is clung to as the external object itself, then it should be acknowledged that it is caused by the external object. Whatever is fully manifest internally in the aspect of grasping, but is not particularly clung to as the external object itself, it is reasonable to infer that it is not caused by the external object. Any cognitive phenomenon that clings to the meaning of an external object is caused by the external object, just like the appearance of blue. The appearance of sound is also clung to as the meaning of an external object. If there is doubt as to why this is so, it is because if from the appearance of clinging to the external object itself, it would follow that one would not be able to recognize external objects such as form. Therefore, it should be said that for the appearance of sense consciousness that particularly clings to the nature of an external object, that which cognizes other external objects should be regarded as caused by the external object. If particularly clinging to the external object, and from the appearance of sound, the external sound cannot be recognized and is not something to be distinguished, if that is not caused by the external object, then from the appearance of blue and so on, the general distinction and the external object caused by it would only be established. Because it is also considered that blue and so on are caused by the external object. Just as from the appearance of blue and so on, the external blue and so on can be distinguished, and it is considered that those appearances are caused by the external object, so too, for the appearance of sound that is in sense consciousness and clings to the nature of an external object, sound should be able to be distinguished, and it should be acknowledged that it is caused by the external object, because there is no difference between the appearance of sound and the appearance of blue and so on. Therefore, for the proponents of external objects, the pervasion that particularly clings to the appearance of external objects and becomes the cause of establishing external objects is indeed caused by the external object. Otherwise, no appearance would be able to cognize objects. For the appearance of consciousness of those with cataracts and so on, although it particularly clings to the external object, it is deceptive and therefore cannot cognize the external object, because it is not caused by the external object, so it is confused.
