The so-called "is" is the view of the master Dignāga. The so-called "that," because for things that do not need to be established, the establisher is not obvious, so from things that do not need to be established, the opposite is established. For this, some people think that this is an arbitrary reversal, but because there is no connection, the pervasion cannot be established, which has been said slightly. Furthermore, if merely because of not seeing, it becomes contradictory from the dissimilar side, then how does the master say that inference with remainder is erroneous? The so-called "for example" is to show the inference with remainder spoken by the master. The fruit ripens and the taste, the so-called "this taste," is the same as the taste of the eaten fruit, which is what needs to be established. The gray shape with special characteristics is the reason, and growing from a tree stump or a single branch is also the reason. The eaten fruit is the example. There is also something not obvious in this combination, because if the fruit other than the eaten fruit is taken as the subject, and if it relies on the thing to be established itself, then the reason, growing from a single branch and the shape having no special characteristics, is not obvious for things that do not need to be established. In this way, because the reason does not enter for things other than what has been eaten and taken as the subject, it is not obvious for the thing to be established. Therefore, how can the reason that establishes the opposite merely because of not seeing be erroneous for the thing to be established? Some people, such as the Īśvara school, say that the harm to the thing to be established by direct perception, that doubt itself is erroneous, because the reason is erroneous because of doubting that direct perception harms the place of the subject. Its meaning is that the reason cannot be understood merely by concomitance and opposition, but there is another characteristic called "having a place without harm." For doubting harm by direct perception, because that is uncertain, the other characteristic is uncertain, therefore it is erroneous. The so-called "is not" is to refute it. Because there is no harm by direct perception to the place of the subject. If there is harm by direct perception to the subject, then what will happen?

If there is doubt about what, it is doubting that harm will enter. Because for the other side of manifest desire, it is not certain that there is no harm. If it is admitted that even for doubting harm, the establishing factor is allowed to enter, then harm entering will also enter the object that has been harmed. In that case, for whatever has obvious harm, inference will also enter, if you think so. This is said to clarify: valid cognition entering is what refutes the reason, but if valid cognition does not enter and causes harm, then because it is not what makes one understand, all reasons cannot be trusted. Like this, as long as the reason has not entered, it is just doubt that there is no object to be established, and the doubt of non-existence is also the doubt of harm. Whatever has the object of harm is not what makes one understand, therefore nothing will become what makes one understand. If previously the establishing factor has entered, there will be no doubt that there is no object to be established in some objects, because the thing has been determined. If so, then the certainty of no harm from before is itself what makes one understand, what is the use of other reasons? Therefore, the reason is applied to what will become a doubt of harm. If that is the case, then doubting harm, as a branch of the reason entering, that itself does not make the reason flawed. Therefore, the valid cognition that enters to prevent the object itself is what causes harm, not what has not entered, because doubt itself is the object of the reason. If that is the case, then for contradiction as well, the valid cognition that enters will cause harm, not doubt. Just not seeing, there is no valid cognition that causes harm entering, this is the explanation for doubt. Contradiction is only establishing, only certain, only establishing, it is what makes one understand. Therefore, such a nature, the contradiction of the nature of establishing, depends on certainty. This is what is being said: the reason is not like a lamp, it is not what makes one understand by the meaning of a suitable difference, however, if what is to be established does not exist, it is certain that it will not arise. Its non-existence will not arise, that itself is what establishes the hidden meaning.
