Having etc. themselves are not, because they can arise even without fire. The fact that the fruits of those previous ones are certain is also regarded as a reason here. If it is certain that some dharmas only and without them will definitely not arise, then at that time those dharmas will become the objects of only and producing, to this doubt, it is answered "no". If that particularity to be produced is grasped, then it is considered that the dharma related to producing is what should be understood. When the particularity to be produced belonging to the fruit is certain, then it means that the dharma of particularity existing in the cause is what should be understood. Therefore, what is to be produced and the thing that produces also become certain objects, but the thing to be understood and the thing that understands are not certain objects themselves. Therefore, the meaning of this is: a thing has the thing that is produced and the thing that produces, but merely by this, it is not the thing to be known and the thing that knows. What is it then? The certainty of the thing that is produced and the thing that produces is the reason for the thing to be known and the thing that knows. If it is certain in some aspects, then it is known that that thing is mistaken. For example, being certain as sandalwood fire is not certain as the producer of mere smoke, because even without it, smoke can be seen. If smoke is also certain to have things themselves etc., then it will not be certain as the fruit of fire, because even without fire, only things exist. Therefore, a thing with all its own nature is the thing to be produced and the thing that produces, but the nature of the thing to be known and the thing that knows, for all parts, will certainly become the thing that is produced and the thing that produces. Without it is uncertain, not otherwise. Depending on certainty, the thing that is produced and the thing that produces will not become partitive either. After proving that the particularities existing in the cause are all to be understood, in order to show that the generality existing in the fruit is also to be understood, it is said that the difference as a sign, that is, the generality existing in those differences, is considered to be what should be understood. Thus it is said.

It is said that if only the thing itself is determined, then the illusion is not dependent on smoke. If the difference is stated in detail, then stating it in detail for the sake of understanding what is to be expressed is meaningless. Indeed, here, it is not the general concept that is stated in detail in order to eliminate the illusion. What is it then? Because of habit, some cognizers, even for what is seen, will have the certainty that "this thing has a body." Or, all cognizers will recognize what is seen in a general form, and the determination of the difference will occur later. For this, the general concept to be approached is not abandoned. Therefore, the object of the cognizer's attachment is the general concept grasped by the difference, not because of the illusion of the difference. For example, saying something like "This is a scarecrow, because there is a bird's nest on top," the detailed statement of the top itself and having a bird's nest is for the sake of their respective illusions. When one wants to recognize the difference, if the general concept is not treated as a difference and remains in the mind, then, due to the nature of that general concept, one will have an illusion about the thing, so it is not desired that the general concept be understood. If the result is understood in order not to have an illusion, then, even if the smoke is produced from fire, even if it is produced from that, how can there be no illusion? This is explaining the reason for not having an illusion. If one has an illusion about a causeless thing, then this result transcends the caused thing; if one has an illusion about fire, then the smoke transcends the caused thing. The phrase "If one observes what" refers to the observation with the cause as the object. Not observing meat, etc., is not the thing of the cause. If those that are not observed are observed, then the observed thing is the result. "Becoming its characteristic" means that if the unobserved thing is the object of the characteristic of observation at the time of unobservation. This is saying that if the unobserved thing also exists at the time of unobservation, then if it appears, it will definitely be able to determine its appearance, so it can be determined that it is the result. Then, what is it that can definitely determine the appearance when going from unobserved to observed? It is the unobserved.
