It is not dependent on the third way. However, what is said as "the reason for the meaning of scripture" refers to "transcending the senses." Whatever reasoning enters into the meaning of transcending the senses is the reason for establishing the third way, which relies on the meaning of scripture itself. It is not like the other three ways that enter through the power of things. So, what does it mean to say that relying solely on the reasoning of scripture would hinder the attainment of higher realms by eating dog meat? Because the meaning of scripture has no basis, and because there is no real existence, it is not reasoning. The meaning of all treatises should be established by reasoning, and the meaning of treatises also truly exists in relation to the meaning established in other aspects. Only then can inference based on the meaning of scripture enter. Because there is no reasoning, the meaning of other aspects cannot truly exist. Therefore, how can there be reasoning when it is impossible to establish any meaning of scripture with reasoning? If it is said that even without reasoning, merely through the power of fame, it can enter into multiple meanings in some cases and into certainty in others, then why say "by fame itself, sound is meaning," and so on? The answer is that because "other ways" have already been mentioned, whatever other ways are impossible to enter into multiple meanings are because there is no reason for the absence (of multiple meanings). Even if sounds have the same meaning, they enter by virtue of approximate indication, and even if they are used in other terms, they can still enter. Therefore, doubt arises. Is this sound capable of understanding all the meanings of its own nature? Or is it by virtue of approximate indication? In either case, being able to understand all meanings means that there is no prohibition against entering all meanings. Whatever sound has various abilities is called "that." The so-called "self" does not enter into multiple meanings merely through the power of terminology, but the "self" is also more truly existent than fame. Its meaning is that by the power of terminology and fame, sounds are able to truly exist in entering multiple meanings. Therefore, the sounds of the Vedas, such as "offering to fire," and so on, need to be determined.

Is this an unwanted meaning due to the conventional power of invisible scholars? Or, like the sound of a cow, is it that the king's (རྒྱལ་, Rgyal, king) diviner does not want to accept it, and clearly transforms the meaning into another meaning? Undoubtedly, this will cause doubt. Therefore, it is said that being doubtful due to the power of fame is a logical statement. One might think that the Vedas themselves clearly reveal their own meaning. For example, the Vedas reveal their own meaning to the king's diviner, and therefore, the meaning of the Vedas has been revealed to him. To refute this, I will explain as follows: Some people say, in the forest, "This road is this road." Others say, "This road is my own road." This shows that by introducing other meanings, this meaning is revealed. If the Vedas have the power to reveal their own meaning, then they should also be able to reveal my own meaning to us. Therefore, it does not reveal its own meaning to the king's diviner. When someone says, "The Vedas reveal this meaning," he is actually borrowing the name of the Vedas to show himself. For example, "I should eat dog meat," etc., which shows that this meaning is inferred by himself. Therefore, there is no difference for the initial "I." Explaining this meaning is to distinguish between the two. This verse indicates that the meaning of the Vedas has not been determined by the giving of speech. Therefore, the meaning of the Vedas cannot be determined by fame, nor by logic, nor by the giving of speech. Furthermore, if there is a definite meaning, then the king's diviner would know and approach it. From where does the certainty that uniquely reveals meaning come? It simply does not exist. If a sound is capable of expressing all expressible objects, and sound is seen to be used through convention, then how can it be determined to be one meaning? Even if the Vedas have a definite meaning, how can it be known? There is no inherent peculiarity in the sound of the Vedas from which meaning can be determined.
