If so, it would lead to the absurd conclusion of having no result. Just as relying on co-action to generate the knowledge that sound is permanent would lead to a great absurdity, the same absurdity would arise if one relied on co-action for benefit as well. Therefore, to conclude after accomplishing the desired purpose, it is said: Therefore, the nature of what can be an object is occasional. Because of this, it is impermanent. And how is impermanence like a sprout that follows the seed and is the fruit of the seed? This objectifiable entity also follows the actions of a person, the place, and the union of actions, and is subject to change. Therefore, what is produced by the actions of a person is made by a person and arises from a person. Therefore, this sound is occasional and follows the actions of a person, so it is impermanent and made by a person. If it were permanent, it would not be a means of expressing meaning, which is what "if it were not so" means. If it were permanent, then because there would be no connection of non-occurrence, meaning could not be understood from sounds. The word "also" is used to connect. Permanence is not a result. The nature of sound is also different from meaning, so it has no connection with the nature of meaning either. Therefore, when both connections are absent, one different thing cannot understand another different thing. If someone thinks that sound understands meaning through a connection related to its own nature, and that its own nature is existence itself, then it is said, "The existence of sound itself." For the difference of meaning, the thing that possesses difference, its existence is not related by nature. Explanation of the reason: because existence is without difference for all things. The meaning is this: once the nature of sound is established, it has no dependence on meaning whatsoever. Therefore, if meaning is understood merely by the existence of sound, then since existence has no difference, all things would be understood, and the understanding of things with difference would also be seen. Therefore, there is a connection with the difference of meaning, and it is from the different meanings...

It is reasonable to have arisen, because there is no other way. If one thinks thus: How can a sense that is not born from an object cognize a differentiated meaning? Because the sense is able to generate knowledge of a differentiated meaning, and the meaning is also able to be apprehended by a differentiated sense. Apart from the sense and the object, sound and meaning must also be mutually suitable. Meaning can be known by the object itself through a differentiated sound, and sound can also be known by the object-possessor itself through a differentiated meaning. If one says that their suitability must be object-possessingness, then, welcoming this doubt, it is said: It is not so. Among the object and the sense, the certainty that individually determines a certain object of the sense is the reason for the characteristic of arising from that meaning, that is, the certainty of the meaning of the sense is the reason generated by it. What shows this is "helped by the object" and so on. It must be admitted without doubt that if it is not so, the object will become unhelpful, and the unhelpful object will not become dependent on the sense,

If one thinks like that, then the statement in the "Nyāyabindu" that things that do not depend on each other can also generate knowledge would become contradictory here. This view is also unreasonable. For example, seeds together with soil and so on produce the first distinction similar to the growth of sprouts. For this, the seed depends on the factors that work together with the soil and so on to produce the first distinction, but the soil and so on do not help it. Similarly, the eye faculty can also generate consciousness even without the help of objects. If you ask how to rely on things that do not help, there is no reliance at all. However, it is only the assembled cause that produces the first distinction by its very nature, which is similar to the seed producing the sprout, while in other cases, because there is no cause, it is only the lack of that nature. Similarly, here too, it is only the assembled cause that is the distinction of nature. Therefore, if you say that this contradicts the scriptures and reasoning, the answer is: This shows that when a result arises, sometimes something needs to exert its own nature's help on something, then sometimes it is by exerting help that the result arises, or if it does not exert help, then it is through the distinction achieved by the assembled causes that the result arises. For example, for the second moment and so on, it is the seed helped by the field and so on that produces the distinction similar to the growth of the sprout, while for the first moment, it is like the distinction is achieved only through the assembled causes, so that together with those causes, the first distinction arises. Undoubtedly, it must be admitted that the distinction of one's own nature, which is helped by the seed and so on, arises from one's own causal continuum, and similarly, it must also be admitted that the distinction of one's own nature, which is helped by the distinction of the root object, also arises from one's own causal continuum. Among them, sometimes it is the object that awakens, and sometimes it is the assembled cause, but for permanent things, there is no certainty.
