This is certain. It cannot be explained solely by relying on signs or seeing, without depending on the memory of the relationship. If someone thinks, for example, that fire is obvious and cannot be proven by inference, similarly, the obvious result cannot be proven by inference. Only hidden things can be proven by inference. Then, it is said, "What of," etc. For the result that is not obvious, one cannot definitively determine the entities of cause and effect to be proven by the obvious and the invisible. If one also thinks that fire and smoke are the entities of cause and effect, even so, as long as the result is not seen, one cannot determine the final outcome, let alone the cause? Like this, in an instant, one can temporarily distinguish by seeing this shore. Needless to say, distinguish its ability. If the result is manifest, one can determine that because the result has arisen, this is its final stage. If there is no result, it cannot be determined. This explanation means that for the result that is not obvious, one cannot recognize the entity of the cause. Therefore, the result cannot arise from the momentary cause. If the thing seen cannot prevent what is contrary to its result, then fire also cannot prevent its result, the opposite of the body being completely burned, the object produced by the cold touch, etc. If one cannot understand this contrary meaning, this is also an expectation. So, how should it be understood? It is said, "The opposition of causes," etc. This sentence means that the cause does not prevent the opposite by establishing a result that is contrary to other things, but rather prevents the opposite by preventing the cause of the opposite itself. To illustrate this with an example, it is said, "For this," which refers to the dharma to be proven. "Erected hair" refers to standing upright. Saying "etc." includes shivering, etc. These are different from those produced by joy and faith, etc., therefore they are different. "Does not exist" refers to the dharma to be proven. For which man who is burned

It is a distinction as an intermediary, because of that reason. From the manifestation of the distinction of being able to burn, it can be inferred that the cold touch disappears, therefore its result also disappears. This argument for proving non-existence is also directed towards the non-perception of cold touch and its result. If complete burning is inferred from seeing fire, then isn't the erection of hairs and so forth, which is contrary to complete burning, eliminated? Why is it said that if those contrary causes are contrary? It is explained: The distinction of doing such as raising hairs and the contrary, complete burning, is the state of the body being warm. That state of warmth prevents the distinction of doing such as raising hairs. The cause of complete burning is fire, and certainly the distinction of doing such as raising hairs is because of the cause contrary to cold touch. This is what is being said: The distinction of doing such as raising hairs and the state of complete burning are mutually contradictory. When the state of complete burning is inferred from seeing fire, the elimination of doing such as raising hairs and so forth is not the case, but rather from seeing fire, the characteristic of the cause of doing such as raising hairs, the cold touch, is eliminated. That is said because if it is realized that the cessation of cold is non-existent, then it is certain that its result is also non-existent. In order to show other arguments as well, it is said "by this." By that contradiction, also from the result, it is explained that the result that is not contradictory to cold touch, smoke is not contradictory to the result of cold touch, such as raising hairs, and it is certain that that does not exist. This is what is being said: When fire is ascertained from smoke, through inferring the result of the nature of complete burning, the elimination of doing such as raising hairs and so forth is not the case, but rather from ascertaining fire, cold touch is eliminated, and from that, its result is also eliminated. The example of that is "for example." This distinction of the subject is that the distinction of doing such as raising hairs and so forth, together with what was previously shown, that is not possessed of fire that is inherently related, that is what is to be established.
