If one sees contradiction, absence of cause, and absence of pervasion, how can one understand the absence of the other? If one follows the non-apprehension that understands the meaning of contradiction, the pervaded, the pervader, cause, and effect, then by that alone, one can understand the absence of the other. Merely being contradictory, without cause, and without a pervader is not sufficient. Therefore, in order to establish the term 'absence' in this way, all non-apprehensions connected by 'also' and so on are explained as being included within the non-apprehension of appearance. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: 'If one says that one thing exists elsewhere, by what is it known that the other does not exist? If it is said to be from contradiction, how is this established? If it is said to be from non-coexistence, how is this established? If it is said to be from not seeing appearance, this is not the nature.' After saying this, it is said at the end: 'Everywhere, it is the reason itself; in different meanings, there is no difference.' This is what is said. All negations arise from non-apprehension, and beginning with 'all that makes known is the nature of non-apprehension,' this ultimate treatise explains that all negations are preceded by non-apprehension. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: 'For those who say that it is established by valid cognition, refutation by meaning is from this alone.' This is what is said. In order to summarize what has already been said, it is said: 'When appearance is not seen, and when the object is not apprehended, if the cause becomes impossible, then the negation of the object is understood.' Among these, for the non-apprehension of nature and the contradiction of the nature of mutually exclusive existence, there is the non-apprehension of appearance. In this way, if one object appears, one acknowledges the non-apprehension of the appearance of the other nature, as previously shown. For the contradiction of the non-apprehension of cause and non-coexistence, the cause is impossible. In this way, contradictory fire can also eliminate the sensation of cold by eliminating the cause, as previously stated. Therefore, in this way, this verse is a verse that summarizes all the meanings previously explained. If the contradictory result is seen, one can also ascertain the contradiction.

If that cause is not observed, why is it not uncertain? (Someone) thinks that the cause will undoubtedly bring the result closer. But that is not the case, because that cause is mistaken. The cause is a misunderstanding of the result. For example, it is like saying that there is no cold touch here because there are trees, because the trees are seen. The observation of such a cause is not an understanding of the result, because it is uncertain whether it will occur. Therefore, where it is necessary to prevent cold, the fire that prevents cold will undoubtedly occur, but that is not the case. In the special moment of the final stage, there is no misunderstanding. Therefore, if it is suspected that the result can be inferred from that (special moment of the final stage), then that suspicion should be prevented. The cause of the final moment does not infer the result. Why? It is explained that the result that arises from the final moment is staying and delayed, because that (staying and delaying) does not exist. In order to explain the summarized words in detail, it is said "until the final moment." Here, any moment before the final moment of the continuous cause may hinder the production of the result. Therefore, the result cannot be inferred from those (moments). In the final moment, because there is no distinction, there is no hindrance. Therefore, the result can only be inferred from that (final moment). Therefore, that final moment is the sign, and from the observation of that (sign), the understanding that needs to be inferred arises. From what kind of particularity does it arise? Remembering the connection is remembering, and it arises from the observation that depends on that (remembering). It is said like this: if there is a cause of the final moment, observation will arise. After the observation, the connection between the sign and the thing with the sign will be remembered. From the observation of the sign that is determined by memory, the thing that needs to be inferred will be understood. Therefore, first is the moment of the cause, and second is the observation. Because the result that arises at the same moment of observation is obvious, it is even earlier than remembering the connection. In order to illustrate this, it is said "the final moment" and so on. When the sign is seen and the connection is also remembered, how does the inference arise?
