Now, in order to negate permanence, it is solely from non-apprehension. If it is said that permanence is not becoming consciousness, then meat is also not becoming consciousness. However, as long as the nature of appearance is such that meat is considered a different form from a pot, that difference is made by conceptualization. Similarly, permanence is also the nature of the cessation of impermanence, and therefore it is considered a different form. Similarly, from non-existence, also because the nature of negating existence is considered as a reversed form, whether it is an object appearing as a different form or a non-existent object considered as different, if one acknowledges the possibility of appearance and then negates it, it is only done by non-apprehension. For that very reason, no distinction is made in the Hetubindu. To negate difference, it is necessary to specify that it is capable of appearing due to delusion. But to negate what is admitted as non-different, the distinction is meaningless because there is no delusion. Thus, negating self-identity is done solely by non-apprehension. If so, the statement "it is not so, nor is it necessarily so" is included within non-apprehension alone. If it is said that it is not asserted that non-existence is established by direct perception, because it completely eliminates it, and also shows the elimination of others different from it, and that there is no third category, and also because it is the cause of conceptualization in the form of establishment and refutation, and therefore has a result, then it is true that non-existence is established by direct perception, but its designation comes from non-apprehension. If the term "non-existence" arises solely from non-apprehension, then how can it be explained that the conceptualization of affirmation and negation, saying "this exists, this does not exist," is the cause and therefore has a result? It is said so because it is considered that the conceptualization of affirmation and negation alone, saying "this object is existent, this non-object is non-existent," has a result. Therefore, this is the ob-

It will be explained that a mind with discrimination will arise, saying, "It is so." If there is no other term for an object of focus, doesn't it arise solely from the non-perception of appearance? Therefore, how can the term for the absence of an object of focus be established through direct perception? This is unreasonable because, for anything that has a nature different from the object of focus, although it is certain that it is not focused upon, there is doubt about its existence. For the ignorant, the term for non-existence should be established from non-perception. For anything that does not have a nature different from the object of focus, since there is no certainty of non-perception, what else needs to be established for the term of non-existence? Why is that? Because it is definitely focused upon in one way. Being definitely focused upon, when the object of focus is determined, the other is definitely determined as not being an object of focus. As long as it is not certain that there is no other knowledge, then the knowledge of the nature of certainty will not be certain, because knowledge distinguishes itself from other knowledge, which is what will be explained. Therefore, because it is the cause of the term for the absence of other knowledge, it is explained as non-perception through the way of introducing negation, not as direct perception itself. The teacher also said that all these negations come from non-perception. This is explaining that the term for the absence of something other than the object of focus is the reason for non-perception, but it is not the object of focus itself. Because it is the cause of the term for the absence of an object of focus, the object that appears through direct perception is actually stated as being determined to be non-existent. In this way, the certainty of determining the nature of direct perception itself is the very thing that determines the absence of other knowledge. If the appearing object exists, then the determination of the absence of other knowledge produced by direct perception is unreasonable. Therefore, the direct perception that actually determines the absence of other knowledge is the very thing that determines the non-existence of the object. Because it actually determines the non-existence of the object, that knowledge itself is taken as the proximate cause, and it is actually spoken of as non-existent. Although it is certain that there is no object of focus, because existence is seen, the appearance of non-perception is called a term. Therefore.
