It is dependent. When practicing, if one practices one dharma, it is not necessary to rely on other unobstructed dharmas. As for negation, it relies solely on other dharmas that contradict what is to be negated. Wherever "abandonment" is mentioned, it should be understood as the meaning of abandoning other things to be negated. In short, one dharma is to be negated, while others are to be abandoned or relied upon for practice. Our terms for dharma and possessor of dharma are like that. Now, in order to show that the imputation of terms for dharma and possessor of dharma is not harmed by true knowledge, it is said: Just as one relies on a possessor of dharma to understand the terms of various things, so too, the one who uses terms accepts the term without examination, that is, without discrimination, and this is understanding. It is said that discrimination itself is what distinguishes, but it is also false, so what is used to distinguish the object? For example, clinging to a mirage as water is dispelled by the true knowledge that arises from oneself, and so is the imputation of dharma and possessor of dharma. To explain this necessity, it is said, "basis of different meanings." That is, in any term, there are different meanings that contradict each other as the basis. Knowing a mirage as water is not based on a reason different from water, so it is harmed. But the terms of dharma and possessor of dharma have contradictory reasons, so they are not harmed. If this imputation were occasional, it would cause harm. But it is not occasional, so to prove this in another way, it is said: This is beginningless and also a habit, the ability to generate discrimination. What is the meaning of dharma and possessor of dharma that arises from that? Worldly meaning, that is, the meaning commonly accepted by worldly people, the one who uses terms does not cause harm, because the knowledge that causes harm is not true. Therefore, because it is not occasional, it does not cause harm. Now, explain how to rely on difference and how not to reverse falsehood.
