It is for the sake of understanding the meaning. Because one understands that meaning from oneself, and not from other signs, therefore one can understand the particular certainty, which is its definition. If understanding depends on other causal factors, or is understood from association with others, then that understanding is not directed towards particular certainty, because the other efficient cause itself has no power. How is it powerless? Because through the common nature, one knows that the sign is related to the common nature, and also knows that the common nature is pervasive in the subject of the example, thereby being able to understand what is to be proven. If the sign does not appear in the subject to be proven, then understanding that it does not arise is itself understanding what is to be proven. The sign is not like a lamp, which can illuminate hidden things. Therefore, the other sign itself cannot particularly establish. Then, how is it directed towards its own characteristics? It is said: Not being deceived about the meaning of one's own characteristics is the attainment of certainty that precedes it. Not being deceived is the same for both direct perception and inference, therefore both valid cognitions are directed towards objects. Therefore, what is apprehended by direct perception is the particular, and what is apprehended by inference is the general. Just as it is not a valid cognition because what is apprehended and the object are not one, so too, direct perception is not a valid cognition for the momentary object of apprehension, because it cannot be obtained. Therefore, if both valid cognitions rely on a continuous stream of certainty, then they are the same in being directed towards their own characteristics. However, because each determined stream, acting by its own nature, can establish separation from other streams, direct perception is directed towards its own characteristics. And inference cannot establish the distinct particularity that is separated from other streams, therefore it is directed towards the general. After eliminating the remainder of the reversed cognition of the object, in order to show the third aspect of what is said as "the three-aspect sign," it is said: The nature of the inference to be explained.

It exists there, and it is certain to exist in the concordant side that is similar to it, and it is certain not to exist in the discordant side that is dissimilar. Then, what is to be inferred? It is said: It is what one wants to know, that is, it exists in the difference of what one wants to know. Therefore, it is called what is to be inferred, that is, the subject of the proposition. The term "to be inferred" applies to three situations: the general of the dharma and the subject that is understood from what establishes it, that is directly to be inferred; and the pervasive realm, the dharma to be established, and the realm of the nature of the reason, the subject of the proposition, that is nominally inferred. The general in this realm is not to be inferred, because the sign is not established in such a general. Even if it is established, it is not the sign itself, because there is no dharma to be established. Even just the dharma is not to be inferred here, because it will be explained that it exists only in such a dharma from the perspective of following and reversing. Therefore, it is specifically emphasized that the subject of the proposition itself is to be inferred. The word "here" refers to this occasion of the nature of the reason. Seeing is certain for what is to be inferred, for example, seeing smoke on the ground is directly perceived, and the fact that sound is produced is inferred. Existing there is not only from valid cognition, but also, similarly, it is the same as that, that is, also in the concordant side. The word "ཉིད་" is to show the return from the discordant side, and the word "ཡང་" is جمع. Distinguishing the subject of the proposition that is to be inferred is to distinguish the possibility of existing in other similar subjects of the proposition, which is contradictory. If one does not distinguish by the subject of the proposition, then at that time, the dharma to be inferred is the reason, and if the reason is not the dharma to be inferred, then that is what is desired. The meaning is that, for example, just as the king's attendant is different from others, similarly, what is to be inferred is also different from other dharmas and subjects of the proposition, and to eliminate other doubts, it is said "not", that is, existing in others is not contradictory. Why is that? Because it is not possessed, it is unrelated.
