How should I act to avoid this fault? Here, some mental illusions follow the appearance of what is seen, such as the illusion of shapes like squares. Some are independent of what is seen, such as the illusion of snakes, etc. The illusion of a snake does not follow seeing a rope, but it arises when the factors of what is seen are unclear. Among these, those that always follow what is seen cannot be reversed by analysis, such as the perception of the sky being low and the concept of things with branches, which have the same nature. Also, when the appearance of the object to be observed is unclear and uncertain, the imputation of similar objects occurs, which disappears when the seen object is carefully analyzed and determined. The cognition of seeing two moons, etc., does not always follow seeing two moons, but it appears differently due to certain reasons. If it is determined through analysis that there is only one moon, then it will definitely disappear. Since it has not disappeared, it is not produced by the mind. Some say that for the dream consciousness of two moons, etc., which is not produced by the senses but is non-conceptual and clearly appears, it is necessary to mention "non-erroneous" in order to eliminate it. This statement is unreasonable, because dream consciousness itself is not a correct cognition, so it can be excluded simply by mentioning it. For those who consider it to be correct cognition and non-conceptual, if "non-erroneous" is not mentioned, then there will be doubt about the appearance itself, so "non-erroneous" must be mentioned for their sake, such as to eliminate the cognition of a conch shell as yellow. Then, why is it called dream consciousness? The answer is, the debater believes that dream consciousness is a non-conceptual inverted consciousness, and believes that the cognition of seeing two moons, etc., is correct cognition, and believes that neither should mention "non-erroneous" in order to eliminate it, so they will think, what is it for? That which is eliminated by "non-erroneous"

The questioner asked this, and the teacher said that for some erroneous knowledge arising from the sense faculties that desire correct knowledge, and for the sake of dispelling these errors, the mention of "non-erroneous" must also be explained without a doubt, and therefore "non-erroneous" is explained. Therefore, it is reasonable to establish that it arises from the sense faculties in this way, and this is the conclusion. Therefore, for this error that is eliminated by mentioning "non-erroneous" through the error itself, even if it arises from the sense faculties, it appears as if it were direct perception. Because error, even if it arises from the sense faculties, appears as if it were direct perception, it is for this very reason, because of this cause, that one remembers and desires. This complete sentence means that error and conventional knowledge, etc., are categories of conceptual thought, separated from the collection, that is, distinguished differently, and thus independent of each other. Using cataracts as an example, it illustrates that there are appearances similar to direct perception that arise from other causes, so mentioning cataracts is an approximate explanation. The teacher Dharmakirti, through the term "with cataracts," explained the appearance similar to direct perception represented by cataracts. Otherwise, if what arises from cataracts is also conceptual thought, then it would be covered by merely mentioning error, and it would be meaningless to list it separately. No matter how it is listed separately, the speaker would become unwise, and if one promises to make distinctions, it would lead to endlessness. Therefore, cataracts are an approximate explanation of other appearances similar to direct perception that are non-conceptual. For this definition of "direct perception is separate from conceptual thought," this is a special exclusion, that is, here through the term "special exclusion." Except for cases arising from cataracts, etc., that which is without conceptual thought is direct perception, which is to show that what arises from cataracts, etc., is specially excluded. Therefore, just as what arises from cataracts, the non-conceptual thought that has not become an error, that is direct perception, and therefore, the remainder of the definition should be measured in this way to exclude the object. Therefore, in any case, the category of conceptual thought
