It is not caused by sleep, etc. However, it is seen as the cause of designation from opposites and consequents. Therefore, the object seen at the time of designation is an object with a domain, so it is the cause of the collection of the nature of the previously seen domain. Holding onto the previously seen domain itself, even if it appears as a non-synonymous nature, it will not become clear. Because if it appears as synonymous, it will become clear. The object of sight that has previously entered is itself regarded as a previously existing object, which is not the nature of appearing as synonymous, so it is not clearly visible. What is seen by the dim-sighted does not appear as a non-synonymous nature, therefore the collection of sounds is clearly visible. Even such a change is sometimes made clear by some causes of clear appearance. Conceptual thought is a special cause of the clear appearance of consciousness, capable of showing various meanings, but it is not made clear even by the confusion called sleep. Therefore, conceptual thought cannot be made clear by any cause of the clear appearance of consciousness. For this very reason, it is said in the scriptures that neither confusion nor anything else makes conceptual thought clear. Whatever is seen at the time of designation, the consciousness that has tactile contact with the object by itself, cannot be made clear by anything, for example, like the conceptual thought that has passed for a long time since sight ceased. The conceptual thought in a dream is also one that makes contact with an object by itself at the time of designation. Clear appearance itself is the nature of appearing as synonymous, and holding onto what was previously seen is universally manifested as an object of non-synonymous nature. The object of the previous consciousness itself does not exist when the previous consciousness ceases, therefore, the later consciousness touches the object by the non-synonymous nature of the object of the previous consciousness, and at the time of designation, it is also the holding of the object of the previous consciousness itself that is particularly grasped by the sound of sight, therefore, this is aimed at being pervaded by contradiction.

If so, then since the pervasiveness that contradicts appearing clearly, any conceptual thought that grasps the nature of seeing previously cannot make it appear clearly. Then, since it is not close, it grasps what was seen previously, so it is not clear. This itself should be stated as a reason. Why say that because dreams also cannot make it clear, conceptual thought cannot make it clear? That is true. However, some might doubt that just as the mind's consciousness is not clear, it becomes clear through meditation, so too is conceptual thought. To dispel this doubt, it is shown that the cause of the mind's consciousness appearing clearly is weak in making conceptual thought appear clearly. Its meaning is this: the mind's consciousness is the cause of appearing clearly, so conceptual thought also does not make it clear, because appearing itself is contradictory when mixed with sound. For that very reason, sleep also does not make it clear, because contradiction is close at hand. If the meaning to be meditated upon is to become clear, then sound is not the meaning to be meditated upon. Even if sound and meaning are the meaning to be meditated upon, as long as it still appears as what was seen before, then it is a consciousness with conceptual thought, and even then, they are not clear, because they appear as not close. Furthermore, when one does not grasp it as what was seen before, there is also no appearance of things that are mutually primary and secondary, that is not an appearance of connection. Because it is separated from secondary and primary objects, grasping emptiness with connection is not a consciousness with conceptual thought, just as grasping two vases is not with conceptual thought. For that very reason, although the yogi's consciousness does not grasp sound and so on as objects, it is conceptual thought because it does not grasp the nature of special things as secondary and primary, it has been explained many times. When abiding in this way, the meaning of the present context is this: the mind's consciousness with special meaning...
