The Kapilas say that direct perception is the knowledge that arises from the connection between the senses and their objects, which is inexpressible, non-erroneous, and possesses the nature of clinging. This is also the view of the logicians, and the Vaisheshikas are similar to it. The Samkhyas' victor, Serkya, says that clinging to objects individually and seeing them is direct perception. The sage Gautama says that whatever mind possesses the five senses, by placing external objects nearby, from the nature of universals and particulars, definitely grasps the particulars, and among the five activities of the mind, the supreme activity is direct perception. The Naiyayikas say: The view that exists initially is a non-conceptual wisdom, like the wisdom of children and mutes, etc., arising from pure entities. Other than that, whatever things, such as caste, etc., the mind clings to, are considered to be direct perception. They say that all of these consider direct perception to be associated with conceptual thought. Because this treatise is precisely the ascertainment of reason, in order to refute them from the perspective of reason, it is said, "Direct perception, free from conceptual thought," etc. The term "direct perception" refers to words that follow and oppose, and are known to make things manifest in meaning, which are words of subsequent expression. This shows that the basis of the definition has been established. And "free from conceptual thought," etc., are words that prove that its definition has not been established, and they are used to prove this. Although it is not in the order of the sutras, non-erroneousness is mentioned first because it is concise. All of these are sense consciousnesses, which are the very cause of error, so what follows it is also mind consciousness. The self-cognizing minds never have any cause of error in their own nature. However, since conceptual thought itself is the dimness of ignorance, even if it is not self-cognizing, it may be arrogant due to the power of ignorance, so dimness itself may be the cause of error. Yogic direct perception also appears as Ishvara and Purusha, etc., because ignorance itself is dim. Attachment, etc., are called the sound of confused error. Therefore, it should be understood that the knowledge of yogis may be erroneous.

That which expresses is called expression. The general holder of meaning, the appearance, is the generality of sound. The characteristic of sound itself is not to be expressive. That which possesses it is the concept that appears there. When that meaning appears separately, it becomes apparent that the nature of expressing meaning is the general sound of sound, and what exists in a dependent manner is the remaining meaning. Furthermore, Bhartrhari says: Brahman without beginning or end, the reality of sound that is imperishable, from its transformation arise all meanings, act as it goes, thus all meanings are considered the nature of sound. Therefore, one should abandon its nature, so it is said. Again, that very one: Apart from following sound, there is no consciousness in the world. Consciousness itself is what follows and accomplishes. All should be known as sound. Thus, sound is like the life force of consciousness. Since it is considered the nature of consciousness, therefore, before touching meaning, mere awareness is not dharma, so it is said. Why? The consciousness of sound, meaning this pot, is connected in this way, but the sound of pot is not in consciousness itself. If connected in this way, it would be a fault that sound cannot understand the meaning of pot, because the sound of pot expresses consciousness itself. Therefore, the sound that is cognized by the consciousness of sound is the sound of meaning that is very well connected, but it is not the nature of consciousness. Mere awareness is not dharma, thus it is established. Because there is no sound on meaning. When this meaning is connected and transformed, and consciousness arises, it is not reasonable to place the separate appearance of sound, which is not the nature of meaning, in front, just as when taste is connected and transformed, and consciousness arises, the consciousness of color and taste, which is not the nature of taste, is not placed in front. The word "etc." shows that bells etc. are not interconnected. It has shown the separate determination according to meaning, and that is according to consciousness. This is the consciousness arising from hearing, following other meanings such as form, so it should not be grasped. If it is accepted that meaning has expressive sound, then the senses of meaning, form, etc.
