A Commentary on Determining Valid Cognition, by Yeshe Pelzangpo. A Commentary on Determining Valid Cognition By Yeshe Pelzangpo. In Sanskrit: Pramāṇaviniścayaṭīkā. In Tibetan: A Commentary on Determining Valid Cognition. Homage to the All-Knowing! The virtuous-minded one, who acknowledges external objects, or perhaps only consciousness? Accomplishing the two truths, destroying other views, and creating all paths. His means of accomplishment, which is true knowledge, manifest perception thus, inference these two. May the glorious Dharmakīrti, who accomplishes all reasoning, be victorious for a long time! This verse of "Glorious" shows that the reasoning with a true object, spoken by the venerable Dignāga, will be explained. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, the main part of the meaning of the words, such as the treatise that gathers all treatises on valid cognition, is understood. Therefore, the Commentary on Valid Cognition is called the Commentary. This treatise mainly shows the part of reasoning, so it is a treatise on reasoning, not a Commentary. Therefore, this treatise is not a repetition. Some people explain this as a Commentary, which is unreasonable, because it would become a repetition. Therefore, it is said that this is composed to explain the part of reasoning and to show the ultimate true knowledge, and it is said to those who are not proficient in the true knowledge of reasoning. These are all other schools and some people of their own school. That refers to the venerable Dignāga, and is related to "his system will be clarified." What is that like? The glorious one is endowed with a collection of merit from generosity to meditation. The one with immaculate wisdom is wisdom without impurity, and because of the Perfection of Wisdom, he is endowed with a completely pure collection of wisdom, and is fully endowed with a collection of merit. That should be understood from the result, as it is said, "The one who is followed by serving the noble one himself." Among them, the noble one refers to the beginningless Bodhisattva, the venerable noble Mañjuśrī, and so on.

Connective word. Also, it is said that after the teacher Dignāga had mastered all the treatises, he was subduing himself in the manner of a Śrāvaka in a certain part of the monastery, striving for peace. Then the noble Mañjuśrī himself came before him and said: Son of good family, since you are able to do good for all sentient beings, why do you only do good for yourself? Abandon this and rejoice in doing good for sentient beings. Then the teacher prayed: Noble one, my mind is wavering and I am not able to do it. The noble one said: Until you reach the state of Buddhahood, I will completely take care of you, do not worry. After that, the teacher composed many treatises and so on, benefiting the world, which is a saying passed down through the wise. The so-called "self" refers to the three types of acceptance: small, medium, and large. Small means not giving up, medium means showing emanation, and large means personally accepting. After that, the teacher is the one who accumulates merit. If it is not like this, how could there be the greatest acceptance? The so-called "who" refers to "who" is accepted by approaching the noble one himself, who possesses merits and flawless wisdom, and is related to "whose words are heavy" and "whose rules." Whatever increases by being close to the world is also related to this. Also, why respectfully liberate his rules? To show that it is out of compassion. Mentioning "his words" and so on, that is the face of Dignāga. The so-called "heavy words" refers to the manner of speech. The so-called "without definite understanding" means not understanding clearly. His heavy words are external actions. The foolish wisdom of the world refers to unclear wisdom, which is the internal action. Those people will slander the teacher, but the teacher is without any fault. For example, being close to the world, making beings happy with material service, thereby increasing the Dharma for those who have become vessels. How to slander? Because of ignorance, not thinking well about the truth, so not understanding oneself, but imposing accusations on the teacher. That's it.
