Even slightly slandering those who possess excellent qualities is improper. Impropriety is the opposite of what is proper, namely, not wishing to fall into the lower realms, etc. If one gives to such a great source of merit, what need is there to mention benefiting many? Therefore, one should have compassion for sentient beings who dwell in the cause of suffering, because one wishes them to be free from the cause of suffering. What is the reason for this? As has been said before, this is a treatise on reasoning. Therefore, the two, benefit and non-benefit, etc., have been explained. This shows that it is necessary to have the nature of correct knowledge with reason. In the previous verse, by the tiger playing, the fault of repetition is eliminated, and the cause of writing is explained. If one asks, what is the need to explain the necessity of correct knowledge? For all undertakings, explaining the necessity is for the purpose of engaging others in activities other than that undertaking, according to some schools, including myself. Some say that the words explaining the necessity are words, and because they are related to meaning, they are uncertain. Although some words are related to meaning, it is difficult to understand their distinctions, so those with conceptual thought will not grasp them, and therefore those with conceptual thought will become the cause of engagement. Some say that conceptual thought is uncertain, but because no harm is seen, doubt arises about the meaning, and from that, one engages. To this, the former says that even if that word is not expressed, it can be established, and because no harm is seen, one naturally remains in doubt, so there is no need for words. Doubt is not a valid measure, so engaging from it also loses conceptual thought. If one does not engage from doubt, then what is the need for the initial word? Others say that you should not begin to compose this treatise, because there is no need, and this is to show that the reason for stopping is not established. I say this: What does it mean to show that the reason of others is not established? If it is said that it is because there is a need, then the initial word, because it is certain that there is a need, will cause those with conceptual thought to engage. If doubt arises about the need, then the reason will not be established because it is consumed by doubt, then all needs will generate doubt.

It is abiding in the aspect of saying "it is so." Therefore, it should be understood in this way: those who have faith in the authors of treatises will also have faith in the necessity of the treatises, etc., in a correct manner, because it is a trustworthy statement. How does one have faith in the authors of treatises? Just as in other treatises, vows are made with words and calls, since the meaning of the text is correctly aimed, it is established as not deceiving. Here too, it is the same, because it is the speech at the time of composing the treatise. Therefore, the distinctions of speech should be related to the meaning and grasped by occasion, etc. If it is not so, it will lead to the fault of no person's involvement. What is beneficial should be accepted, What is not beneficial should be abandoned. Beneficial and not beneficial are those that are beneficial and not beneficial. Obtaining and abandoning are the agents of obtaining and abandoning, corresponding to the beneficial, etc., in order. Among them, the beneficial is divided into two: worldly and transcendental. The worldly are things like sandalwood and flower garlands in this life, and the nature of good rebirths and enjoyments, etc., in the next life. The transcendental are just liberation, and the bodhisattva himself, and the distinctions of the Buddha himself, so there are five kinds. Moreover, there are five causes for these, making ten in total. There are also ten to be abandoned, distinguished by the worldly and the transcendental. Among them, the worldly in this life are poison and snakes, etc. The next life is the evil realms, etc. The transcendental to be abandoned are: samsara itself, which is incompatible with liberation, and the shravakas, etc., of the bodhisattva himself, and existence, and the Buddha himself, which is the non-Buddha himself. Similarly, there are ten for its cause. Thus, twenty kinds are called beneficial and not beneficial. These obtaining and abandoning must be preceded by correct knowledge, because from wrong knowledge, there is not even a little correspondence with meaning. Even if one encounters the teachings, it is because it is correct knowledge. So, what is correct knowledge? Correct knowledge is of two kinds, thus the number is determined. The continuation of this will be explained below.
