In order to understand the point that refutes the establishment of a phenomenon as the subject of proof, it is like this: by means of what is called "own nature," the subject of proof and so on can be established, and arguments can be made, that is, it can be shown that things like signs and examples can be established. If it is in order to refute the establishment of a phenomenon that is established by its own nature as the subject of proof, then the word "own nature" is mentioned, because saying "oneself wants" does not mean that own nature does not want own nature. If it is in order to fully grasp the refutation of the own nature of a phenomenon, then one should not say "own nature." If it is thought that establishing own nature would lead to self-contradiction, that is not the case, because the object of inference is the universal. By saying "it is not own nature," it is in order to understand that meaning. It will be explained by "that phenomenon" and so on. In order to show other faults, why are phenomena and so on mentioned because they are defiled by conceptual thought? "Because it is not possible" is the opponent's view. "Why" is the view of those who assert an established tenet. If it is said, "because there is no following after a specific reason," that is the opponent's view. "Because it depends on other parts" refers to the first part, the pledge; the second part is the reason; and the third part is the example. Therefore, this (the example) is a fault of parts other than the pledge. If it does not become a fault of the pledge, then why is it said to be a fault of the pledge? It is for this meaning. In this way, if the opportunity to analyze by separating parts is abandoned and analysis is done, then the faults of the reason and so on, as well as the example, are also faults. It will become a fault of the subject, and in that case, the classification of parts will become meaningless. Because the distinction of parts becomes meaningless, it is merely the subject, and by excluding the reason and so on, it is related to the subject due to lack. If it is not like that, then the definitions of the subject and so on are difficult to understand. Because it is difficult to understand, in order to make it easy to understand, the definition of the subject should be stated separately, excluding obstacles from the reason and so on. How is it shown? Non-pervasion and, that is, the numerologists merely say it verbally and call it the subject. Reversal.

Those aspects are very general, especially the Vaisheshika and Nyaya schools. When establishing impermanence with "what is made," they also want to establish the qualities of space. In order to explain the definition of the subject (paksha) according to other systems as taught by the teacher, it is said, "The characteristic of the subject is that which is asserted as the thesis." Anything other than that is not the subject, because exclusion would become a fault, as it would not be accepted. The remainder are the non-pervasive and the contradictory. Because the definition does not apply, the non-pervasive is because it is not the subject, so it is not included in the definition; the contradictory, however, is the subject. Because one sees inverted understanding, it refers to others asserting that sound possesses qualities of space, etc., as the subject. Why is it an inverted understanding? Because one wants to establish it as the thesis and not retract, there is no harm in wanting to establish impermanence itself. If there is no harm, then what is the harm? If even without harm, it is to be established because of committing to the treatise, it is said, "Also, in order to see the endless," because one sees the prevention of all the meanings of the treatise. If "self-nature and intention," etc., are because one understands only the meaning of "only," then one should not say "only." "Here," etc., is said because the word "establish" has a clear connection with the three times. Even if it does not explain what is to be established in the past and present, because the unestablished reason, etc., will be explained later, it will also become the subject. In order to cut off those, the word "only" is said, even in the future, to be understood as only one's own nature. In that case, the nature to be established at all times is not established. If the word "intention change" has already excluded what will be posited, then here, "that self-nature and nature are established" refers to here. "Intention change" is because there is no ability, so it is not a part of understanding in that way. It is related to one subject (dharmin) that is united in meaning. Like that, even if it is unparalleled, it is to establish impermanence itself with the reason of "what is made," and not distinguished by the quality of space, which is not accepted by the opponent. What is called becoming different refers to the three bases.
