Saying "no thing" allows one to realize "not a thing," just as what is done by no thing is said to be what is not done by a thing. Similarly, it arises from no thing. If it is said that it does not arise from a thing, then the cause of this understanding will be obstructed, therefore it is said to be without cause. However, if because of the negative summary, the latter word has no meaning, and it approaches the substance that is indicated, therefore some things are no things, then, if that is the case, then the thing itself will be expressed by another name. Therefore, since it is the very knowledge of the thing, how can it be an object of no thing? This shows that even if this is the meaning of the sound, it is not in accordance with desire. Therefore, because there is no object, it does not arise, so the realization That is not existence. Furthermore, since it is not what is apprehended and grasped by direct perception, it will not become saying that what is seen is the immediately preceding self-continuum. If it arises from the power of direct perception, then it is acknowledged that it is capable of knowing that the very thing seen does not exist, therefore it itself becomes a valid cognition, but not knowing that it does not exist. If direct perception is not an object of non-existence, then is what is not an object also not a valid cognition? It is said: The appearance of direct perception, such as blue, is certain, and by its power it prevents other things, therefore direct perception itself is a valid cognition. Because it is the object of the knowledge that appears there in direct perception, therefore the so-called no thing, which becomes not an object because it is not in direct perception, is not endowed with its own nature, but is merely a term used by conceptual thought. For example, for what is apprehended by direct perception, naming it by the power of direct perception is like direct perception being a valid cognition, similarly, for no thing, when naming it by the power of the appearance of direct perception, direct perception is a valid cognition. From where does it come that its appearance is certain? The appearance of the thing that is mixed in one knowledge is certain, and what is able to abandon what is mixed, if it is mixed with other appearances, then there is no reason to abandon that meaning. Its certain appearance is what abandons other mixtures. What is the reason for

Therefore, since there is no direct perception at all, direct perception is प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण). The ज्ञान (jñāna, knowledge, ज्ञान) that arises from the power of seeing with a definite appearance is not प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण), because it is not Svātantrika. Like this, it does not rely on the senses, because the absence of things is not the cause of arising, and the direct प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण) is the result of the object. It also does not rely on the sign, because there is no sign for absence, and it is not the cause of arising, and inference arises from the object. Here, how can it be said that the conceptual thought that 'there is no pot here' arises from the power of direct perception? Because this understanding arises from the sign of non-perception. It is said: With what certainty, between the immediate moments of direct perception, this is perceived, and this is not perceived, like this, the arising of conceptual thoughts of establishment and refutation, like this, what is said to arise with a definite appearance, that is direct perception. For example, from seeing blue, one thinks that this is blue, not yellow, and so on. What will happen then? Whatever gives rise to the conceptual thoughts of establishing and refuting perception is direct perception, and from that, with the direct perception that refutes what can be seen, because the object of absence of 'there is no pot' is certain, for the pot, direct perception is प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण). However, there may also be things that cannot be seen, so does this direct perception only grasp the place, or does it not grasp the separation from the pot? Like this, even if it is determined by direct perception, when there is doubt about the term 'absence', by non-perception, it becomes the term 'absence of the pot' determined by direct perception, but it is not determined by itself. Therefore, if there is a pot that can appear here, then for one ज्ञान (jñāna, knowledge, ज्ञान), with the nature of combination, it will not only see the place, like this, entering without abandoning the function of seeing, it is to name the absence of the object to be understood by the power of seeing. Because direct perception is able to establish and refute direct perception, therefore, the conceptual thoughts of establishing and refuting the objects of perception and non-perception are not प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure, प्रमाण).
