Since there is not, when the desired expression itself is not a thing, the sounds are all following the signs. Therefore, because it depends on the desire for signs, it is said that there is no certainty about the meaning. Also, because things have no expression, therefore, relying on the object of meaning that has signs, the expression of sounds themselves, with the reason for preventing it, becomes a contradiction, it will be said like this. Those who abandon all expressions of sounds that have signs, saying that it is a unique inference, to those people it should be asked like this: coming from another place, what is it that is to be expressed by the sound of the moon with a rabbit, which is not understood, for the reason, what is it that you want to abandon, if it contradicts the fame arising from the sound, then, how do you abandon all the fame of knowing terms, becoming terms? For that which has not established a sign, how can it be harmed by the fame arising from the sound? Therefore, this is kina oh. For this, others have not explained other treatises very appropriately either. Therefore, the wise are valid. In order to summarize the meaning that has been said, therefore, the reason for saying "therefore" is that whatever meaning has a sign must be contradictory, so it is the word "therefore". Whatever has a reason, that is, has a need, that is the sound of reason. Its meaning to be expressed, or the true meaning to be expressed by sounds, has no harm, that is, it is said that it cannot be eliminated by fame. Because the fame arising from the sign is harm, therefore. In order to show the difference of the object, fame, although it does not arise from outside of inference, is still distinguished. The object of fame is the meaning arising from the sign, and the object of inference is the thing, this is the distinction of the object. If it does not arise from the outside, what is the reason? Saying like before, just as it was promised that the words of trust were harm before, it does not arise from outside of inference, similarly, it is also thought that fame is harm, and it is not direct perception either, therefore it is inference, it is valid.

Because it is unreasonable to harm by what is not non-existent. Having thus explained the well-known self-nature sign, the harm of direct perception is stated. For the object that is extremely well-known to contradict direct perception, sound has various self-natures. Among those self-natures of that sound, which has many qualities made by discriminating consciousness and dependent on negation, whichever self-nature is non-dual to the sense of hearing, that is emptiness. If someone examines that one is general and the other is excluded, thereby blocking the general self-nature, there is also concern about being harmed by direct perception. Because in that place, two self-natures do not exist. Why? Because on that which is manifest, the related other itself does not exist. Why? Because the mind that has mixture, that is, appears as a guide, is invisible. The very existence of what can be seen comes from the consciousness that appears there, and the very multitude also comes from many appearances. Therefore, it should be clearly recognized that this existence itself or the multitude itself is other than the invisible that can be seen. Whatever is non-dual is contradictory because of the reason for abandoning, but not contradictory because of the reason for blocking others. For example, what is called "for example" is an illustration. Regarding the statement "not to be heard," the sound of what can be heard is the abandonment of the non-duality that abides in the self-nature taken by hearing. Therefore, what is called "also" is that, for abandoning the self-nature that is separated from all associations, the very object taken by hearing is harmed by direct perception. For this meaning, here, in the root verse of characteristics, the words "direct perception meaning" and "meaning" are spoken. Again, how is that self-nature expressed by the word "meaning"? It is said that the non-dual self-nature that is taken by sense consciousness, that itself is the meaning from that sound, that is, the ultimate truth, and the remaining self-nature is general, established by discriminating consciousness with reasons for negation. Because that is without entity, therefore it is not taken by the senses. The general self-natures are not taken by the senses, therefore, because those are not established as direct perception, even if abandoned, there is no harm. This fact is indicated by the teacher with the sound of what can be heard.
