The statement "birds and those that follow" is said to be the result of the example of reasoning, "because it exists." If it were not so, how could one not hear the sound? Just as "the pot is permanent," here, saying "the moon is not a rabbit-bearer" is merely without reason, and it is exemplified as a false aspect. Therefore, everything is considered to be unique. In this way, because there is no harm, it is said that it cannot be refuted. If there is harm, just as denying the nature by saying "this does not have this," similarly, if there is no establisher, just as saying "this is not established," it denies the establishment. Therefore, it is also said that it cannot be refuted because the teacher is established by the words that are widely known as sound, which is what is shown by "sound is," and so on. The establishment that comes from sound is that which arises from sound, and because it arises from sound, it is established in all things. The explanation of this is: "Those established by sound are not unestablished." The statement "not unestablished" expresses that it is indeed completely established. "Those established by sound" are those that arise from sound. Why? Because it expresses from convention, it relies on convention. And convention does not depend on things, so it depends only on intention. Therefore, for that reason, it is not unestablished. This is what is said: The characteristic of the very nature of what is to be expressed by sound is that it is made into a convention that depends on intention, so because it is the ultimate nature made by intention, it is completely established in all things even if it is not named. Therefore, whatever abides in conceptualization cannot be expressed by sound with the reason of a convention that depends on intention. In order to show the valid cognition that establishes, the teacher Dignāga said, "The fame that arises from sound." If one does not want to show the establisher, then one would not say, "The very nature of what is to be expressed by sound." By showing the establisher, it is said that it cannot be refuted. Now, the moon...

Because there is no certainty of validity, therefore, in order to explain that which is called "definitely showing," it is explained. In the manner previously explained, because validity necessarily states, therefore, for the object established by inference, it shows the third case, that there is no non-contradictory and non-erroneous one. The so-called "understanding by meaning" refers to implication. If it becomes both certain and non-contradictory and non-erroneous, isn't that so? Because inference necessarily states, therefore, there is no non-contradictory and non-erroneous one, from where does this come? Answer: All those that are doubts of having obstacles are. If there exists an opposing validity, then for all that is established by inference of contradictory meaning established by it, it will be suspected of having obstacles. For doubts of having obstacles, hesitation will also arise. Because of hesitation, it cannot be established. Because it cannot be established, therefore it is uncertain. Therefore, because of that reason, because validity necessarily states, therefore there is no non-contradictory and non-erroneous one. Inference is of two kinds, namely, with an antidote and another. Among them, if certainty arises from an inference without an antidote, then how can it be said that because validity necessarily states, therefore there is no non-contradictory and non-erroneous one? Answer: If for an inference with characteristics, there exists an antidote of non-contradictory and non-erroneous one, then for other inferences made by mere non-omniscient beings, that which does not exist as a non-contradictory and non-erroneous one is uncertain. Therefore, because of that reason, it is said "because validity necessarily" etc. Whatever has an opposing validity, isn't that appearance itself? Or what appears at other times, why does it not appear now? Because it does not appear, therefore there is no contradictory and erroneous one, in order to repeat this, therefore "for a long time" etc. are said. For those unseen meanings, not seeing at other later times, appearance arises. Moreover, people also see that they each have different wisdom, therefore, it cannot be said that what I do not see now is non-existent. Therefore, inference without an antidote is uncertain.
