It is solely for the purpose of eliminating erroneous understandings. The explanation of this point is that the definition of the thesis is stated in order to avoid the non-pervasive object, which is the view that there is no need to rely on characteristics such as causes to distinguish what is to be refuted, and the overly pervasive object, which is the desire to avoid refutation. Which words are used to avoid non-pervasiveness and refutation? These are the words "self-nature," "phrase," and "essence." Those that are uneliminated and included are refutations, which serve to eliminate over-pervasiveness. The words "established and unestablished, but presented as the means of proof itself," "seen in treatises," and "not manifestly wishing to eliminate" are presented so that they do not become the thesis itself. The word "desire" serves to eliminate non-pervasiveness. By mentioning "desire," even if that meaning is not fully expressed, it should be understood that the dharma that serves as the basis for the occasion is what needs to be established. Others believe that merely stating something is what needs to be established, which is detrimental to non-pervasiveness. If these words are detrimental to non-pervasiveness and over-pervasiveness, then what is the definition of the thesis according to the teacher? The answer is: "The commitment to what needs to be established" is the definition of the thesis. Therefore, from the perspective of reason, the desire to be what needs to be established is the thesis, and thus the definition of the thesis is explained. Here, in order to obtain the meaning of the words "desire" and "one's own essence," this is what is desired, but it should not be said that this definition is that of the teacher Dharmakirti. Because if the words are for distinguishing non-pervasiveness and over-pervasiveness, then one should ask with the truth of the definition, i.e., what is desired in its definition. And how can this become the ultimate definition? Because for those that need to be refuted, there is no thesis at all. Why is there no thesis? Because for the object that needs to be eliminated, the commitment to what needs to be established is detrimental, and the remaining established, and the unestablished but spoken of as the means of proof, merely stating, and not one's own desire, these situations do not allow the definition to apply, so there is no thesis.

It is so. Therefore, acknowledging something as that which is to be proven is its sole characteristic. By these means of preventing non-pervasion and over-pervasion, it will also be determined in meaning that acknowledging something as that which is to be proven is the subject, so the meaning will thus transform, but it is not necessary to adhere to the literal words. If it is the characteristic of the subject in order to avoid non-pervasion and over-pervasion, then by merely mentioning what is accepted, it is established that all that is not accepted is refuted, so one's own words become meaningless. Answer: In order to see the inverted understanding, the characteristic of the subject here is made by the teacher with his own words. The dharma seen in the scriptures, even if not accepted, is accepted because the scriptures are accepted. Because it is accepted, it is to be proven, some understand it this way, which is an inverted understanding. Then, by what kind of indication will the inverted understanding be eliminated? When the author mentions himself, what does he show? It shows that there is no harm to what is accepted, that is, what is seen in the scriptures, is not like inferring selflessness from impermanence, it is not the original thing to be proven, nor does it not arise without it. Moreover, if what is prevented harms the original thing to be proven, then relative to this, the ability of the reason is also not established. Then, if it is thought that what is seen in the scriptures is another thing to be proven, then this shows that it is not the thing to be proven, merely because the scriptures are accepted, or the nature of the dharma is timely, it is not the basis of dispute, so it will not become the thing to be proven. Because the scriptures are accepted, it is also thought to be the thing to be proven in that way, which shows that there is no limit. If because the scriptures are accepted, what is seen in the scriptures becomes the thing to be proven, then, like the nature of space, in an inverted way, no dharma will be proven, because there is nothing that is not contradictory, so no reason will be established. Therefore, one's own words do not harm what is accepted, the nature of space itself is not the thing to be proven, and even if it is the thing to be proven, it will become limitless, but by showing, the inverted understanding can be eliminated. If oneself...
