Because doubt arises somewhere, therefore, the uncommon dharma existing on its own basis is the cause of doubt. Life and so on are particularly the cause of doubt, for example, what should be heard, is fully established in permanence and impermanence, and it is certain that it is different from vases and space, etc. But I, by nature, measured by kalpas, for some things like vases, existence and non-existence have not been established, as a cause, therefore, life and so on also have not been established to enter and not enter into this, therefore, life and so on are particularly the cause of doubt. Vases and so on are not certain whether they have self or are without self, therefore, even if they are different from them, it cannot be determined that they are different from one with self or without self. This is a summary statement. This expresses the meaning: as long as it is uncommon, although it can be determined to be different from some things, but if life and so on cannot be determined to be different from some things, then how can it be said that it is not uncertain? Other meanings, because it is not a result, other meanings cannot be established, therefore it is also the cause of doubt. Life and so on that make it understood, because they are different from me, therefore there is no connection of its own nature. It is also not a result. If you ask: how is it not a result? For example, life and so on, and I, cannot simultaneously become the object of cause and effect. If you ask: why? Because the object of cause and effect depends on the visible and the invisible. If the reason for the object of cause and effect to be established, that is, the visible and the invisible exist, then I am not observable. If you think: what can the natural connection do? The answer is: if there is no connection, then it cannot be determined that other things exist from the existence of something, because it would be too extreme. Therefore, it is the cause of doubt. Others say that life and so on are what make me understand, because life and so on are uniquely determined in the difference that is different from its incompatible side, because it is certain. If you ask: how is it uniquely determined? Whatever life and so on are, they are different from the incompatible side, that is, the side of no-self, but not different from the compatible side, therefore it is certain.

Yes. If asked, how does one not revert from the favorable side? Because it is impossible to revert from non-existence. Whatever exists, because it possesses the power of action, becomes a boundary of reversion. I am non-existent to the other, so how can non-existence be a boundary of reversion? Because it is devoid of the power of action, it is not an object of direct perception or inference. Whatever is not an object of valid cognition, the uncertain, for that, nothing can be determined as either existent or non-existent. Because life and so on are definitely one reversion, therefore, just as what is to be measured and so on are definitely one following, so also understanding that it is definitely one reversion. If life and so on are what make one understand, then how is it that what is to be heard is not what makes one understand? Because what becomes the cause of understanding from something, what is to be heard, is not so definitely one reversion. Why? If it is said that it is because it reverts from both the favorable side and the unfavorable side, then this is said to be the complete existence of the former side. What the teacher said is that if the aspect of definite reversion on the unfavorable side is such that the opponent cannot establish it, then it will become expressing the relationship of non-arising. From where is it said? Because in selflessness it is non-existent, but in self it is not non-existent. There also it is non-existent, but it is not existent. In this way, by the force of expressing the two negations that have certainty in selflessness, it abides in self, that is, in existence. What is it like? Other than the abiding place, the non-existence in that very self, and the existence in the other, it will be expressed without being related to those two others. In this way, this, "in selflessness," is definitely a negation in selflessness. In that very self it is non-existent, but in self it is not non-existent. What is called "non-existence" is only non-existence in selflessness. Existence is not like that. Life and so on are non-existent, selflessness is definite. Such an abode of life and so on in self is such that if there is no self, it will not arise. Because if it does not exist, it will not arise, therefore, any reversion that establishes following, because it is all-encompassing, is not something that has reversion. If it does not exist, it will not arise.
