If I do not see it, who will do the work of separating others from suffering? (Answer:) It is compassion. Even without self-grasping, one only sees the momentary suffering. In the past, when holding onto sentient beings, one was also accustomed to compassion with the cause of suffering. Therefore, merely seeing suffering arises from the power of previous habituation. Therefore, it is not like engaging for one's own benefit, thinking that oneself is the agent of separating from suffering in order to make the previous and subsequent moments one. However, all the moments of striving for the sake of separating from suffering arise from previous habituation with the thought, "Me, me." Among them, only some connect it with their own fruit, not all. This is not just speaking arbitrarily with reason alone. For example, in the sutra, the Blessed One taught that love and compassion, etc., are aimed at sentient beings by ordinary people, and at the Dharma that recognizes the selflessness of persons, and at those who are free from the appearance of both grasping and being grasped as having no object. If aiming at sentient beings is because ordinary people have become accustomed to it, then how does aiming at the Dharma arise without habituation? The answer is: Love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, those that enter from habituation of the same kind, exist. The difference is only this much: as long as one sees sentient beings, it is aimed at sentient beings; as long as one sees the Dharma, it is aimed at the Dharma. It is seen that the habituation of these of the same kind exists, and it is the follower of becoming different. If so, even if the view of self is reversed, attachment and so on, which precede the view of self, will arise from habituation, just like compassion and so on, right? The answer is: Those attachments and so on that arise even when the view of self is reversed do not enter into habituation of the same kind in that way. Why? Because if there is no reversal, it will not exist. It has just been said that attachment and so on follow reversal. Then, without fault...

Even for those who are free from desire, there can be compassion and so on. Even so, if a compassionate person works for the benefit of others and there is no result, it is also a reversal. In this way, an action with realization is not without result. A moment is not with result, because it does not abide. Therefore, one abides for a long time, and sees that there is a result under the benefit of others, and then acts. If so, is it acting in reverse? It is not like that. Because if one thinks that there is a result of abiding for oneself apart from benefiting others, then one will act from reversal. But it is not thought like that, because it is thought that benefiting others itself is the result of acting. Although it is thought like that, how does it become a result? Because the characteristic of a result is expectation. What is expected itself is the result, and not something else. Therefore, benefiting others is not a reversal. Therefore, because of compassion, it becomes conventional truth, and because of being free from desire, it becomes like having desire, so one cannot infer desire from the difference of language, because it is not the cause of the result. If one infers desire from language because it is the result of desire, that is not possible. However, because one sees that the speaker himself acts together with desire and so on, one infers desire and so on from seeing that the speaker also acts together with others. If one says so, then because one sees from here that the speaker himself has white cloth, one will also infer that the black speaker also has white cloth, which is too much, and this has already been said. If one does not infer because one is confused about the white cloth itself, then one infers desire and so on, how can one be sure that one will not be confused about this? If one says because one has not seen it, then for those who see and also participate and hesitate, one cannot be sure that one will not be confused, which has already been said before. Furthermore, white cloth and non-white cloth are observable natures, because there is no contradiction, so will they appear together? Or are their natures contradictory?
