It has already been explained in the Pramāṇavārttika. Attachment and so on are inverted, and wanting to speak and so on are not inverted. How can one speak of being with attachment in such a case, just as one speaks of being associated with attachment? Similarly, being free from attachment is also spoken of from the very desire to speak. Therefore, since there is no contradiction, it is not a result, so one cannot understand attachment and so on from mere words. Just as it is not from mere words, it is also not understood from the difference in words, because it is not the difference in words that has become the result of attachment. If there is a difference in words that does not confuse attachment and so on, that person exists. All words are confused about attachment and so on, so it is not the result itself. Why is it confused? Because the name of the result of attachment and so on is also seen as the result of hatred and so on. Because the name is confused, it is confused. Again, how does one who is free from attachment use the name of an object that is subsequently attached to? Because it is difficult to understand the intention. The mind with an object expresses the meaning of clearly thinking of the object, and the need for names is various, so whatever need is thought of, it is difficult to know the meaning of clearly thinking that one who is free from attachment acts like one who has attachment. Confusion is also seen, so because of confusion, it is not the result itself. If I see myself, I will seek a purpose, but for those who have abandoned the view of self, it is not reasonable for a name with realization to pervade having a purpose, because there is no need. Therefore, can attachment and so on be inferred from the name itself? It is not that one does not speak, because it is for the sake of others. Not seeing oneself will not cause one to use names for one's own sake, but for the sake of others it will, because it does not depend on the view of self. The name for the sake of others is also pervaded by seeking a purpose, and seeking a purpose is also attachment. Therefore, is it unreasonable to think that one who knows no-self does not seek a purpose because he is free from attachment? It is not unreasonable, because compassion also uses names. For the sake of others

There are two ways to engage in compassion: one is to seek happiness for oneself, and the other is to seek to free others from suffering. For those who are free from "I" and desire, although there is no benefit for "I", it is not contradictory to act to free others from suffering. If that is the case, is compassion, which has the nature of seeking benefit, itself desire? If you think that merely seeking benefit is desire, we do not object. What we consider to be free from desire will not therefore become possessing desire, because the nature of compassion and desire are different. If the nature between clinging to "I" and not clinging is different, then, what is called seeking benefit is the cause of remaining in samsara, and it is also the root of arising existence. Therefore, are these two not different in nature as the cause of remaining in samsara? Answer: For those who cling to impure things and are happy about it, they are the link connecting rebirth, therefore, as the cause of samsara, their nature is also different. For example, if the concept of "I" arises, one will cling to "I". Those who cling to "I" will perversely think that the suffering in the dark womb is happiness, therefore they will pursue the happiness of "I", and thereby hold onto the womb. Incompatible with holding onto the womb, they will also do things that pursue the happiness of "I". As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "The thought of suffering being inverted and desire are the root of binding everything. Whoever does not have these will not be reborn." This is what is said. For one's own "I" without desire, there is no taking or abandoning for the sake of "I", then how does it hold onto rebirth? Because inversion and happiness are the cause of holding onto rebirth, therefore, compassion arising from non-inversion is without fault. If compassion is also considered a fault, then even if it does not arise from inversion, it will become a fault. If compassion does not arise from inversion, then for those who see no-self, this is unreasonable. Because of what will one enter into compassion?
