It is, because of desire, there is no fault in this. For what one wants to say, it is not called desire, but attachment is said to be clinging to permanence, pleasure, and self. For example, clinging to the self as permanent, pleasurable, and as the cause of my own pleasure, one becomes attached. Here, being constantly present is not permanence, even considering the two moments of before and after as one is also grasping at permanence. Holding onto the view of self is also its object. How can a desirous person, wanting happiness for themselves, not engage in the benefit of others, because they see that the later moments of happiness and having happiness are very different, so they will not engage. Therefore, even those who arouse the mind and speak of impermanence and selflessness, when desire arises, they cling to the previous and subsequent moments as one. The object of grasping at self is also that, therefore, desire is preceded by the view of permanence, self, and selfhood, and there is no confusion. If one engages for the sake of others and not for one's own sake, it is benefiting others, and engaging in this way does not depend on all moments becoming one before and after, because one does not want the result of the action to become mine. Grasping that is preceded by grasping at permanence is faulty, but it is not aimed at just a moment, because its meaning is contrary to benefiting others. This shows the cause of desire. Afflictions are accompanied by contaminated dharmas, and contaminated dharmas are related to fabrications such as self, and are of the nature that is consistent with the fabricated self, and are its object. This explains the object. Being very happy with the untrue self and the cause of happiness is longing, this explains the aspect of desire. Those who have views of self, clinging to the untrue qualities of fabrication, having this aspect is desire, that is its meaning. The object of joy, whether it is self and happiness, or the cause of happiness, whatever does not conform to it, it then

Understanding is done by disagreement. This shows that the view of self and others is the forerunner and is the object of defilements. If there is a view of self and others like this, then it sees disagreement as agreement. Disagreement with self and others is also an imputation, because there is no self and others. Confusion is the aspect of abandoning, saying, "This is what I should destroy." This is an explanation of the aspect of hatred. The basis of both desire and hatred, the perversion of permanence, etc., is ignorance. Grasping the nature of imputation, desire, etc., is a fault of the mind that has the nature of grasping reality, so some may be free from these, because they are not established as the cause of words. If so, then the desire to speak and compassion, etc., will also become forerunners of the view of self and grasp imputation? Answer: Compassion, etc., are not like that, with the view of self as the forerunner. Why? Because there is another. Seeing that there is a view of self, it is not a forerunner of the view of self, but it follows its presence or absence. How is that? Just as if there is a seed first, and then there is a sprout later, it is one that follows the presence or absence of the seed, not from before and after, but because it is one side of the view of self. When one sees oneself, one sees something that agrees with oneself or sees another object, so taking the view of self as a forerunner is a perverse grasping. Compassion, etc., are not like that. Thus, the desire to be separated from existing suffering is compassion. The desire to manifest non-existent benefit is loving-kindness. Joy is being happy with the benefit one wants to obtain. Under the desire to be free from suffering and to obtain happiness, abandoning happiness and suffering is equanimity. The desire to speak itself is spoken of in two ways. Therefore, these do not engage with the self as the object, nor do they understand the nature of perversion in others. Thus, all of this is.
