That which is not suitable is the opposite side. If one does not see that something enters into what is measurable, but because it is not a real ability, and it is also not related to the same kind of fruit, therefore the inference has remainder. For example, showing an example: inferring desire and so on from the body, senses, and mind, it is regarded as having remainder, because the appearance of self and what belongs to self is the cause. Why? It is said: Because if one does not see "I" and "mine", then there is no desire and anger. And why is it said that without a nourisher, these do not arise, that is, improper attention? Reason is the truth of things. To attend to the mind as it is and how it is, is proper attention, which means focusing on the truth of things. The opposite of that is improper attention. There are four types: the aspect of relying on what is impermanent, the aspect of happiness in suffering, the aspect of self in no-self, and the aspect of perceiving purity in impurity. Without such things, faults do not arise. The perversion of permanence, the perversion of happiness, and the perversion of purity are all related to everything. The perversion of self and merely relying on permanence are inherent in everything, not generated by hearing. Therefore, without such improper attention, faults do not arise, so the nourisher is the forerunner. Among them, the body and senses are temporarily not the cause, and the mind is sometimes the cause. Therefore, these do not have the substance of a cause. However, in some ways, it is indeed the cause. The growth of the body and the attainment of youth are the cause of arousing the appearance of clinging to self and what belongs to self, and indirectly it also becomes the cause of desire. Likewise, the strengthening of the senses is also the cause of arousal, and one should follow the connection accordingly. The body and senses are not the real cause, so it is certain that although they are the indirect cause, but I...

Only those who are free from attachment to self and what belongs to self have no power. Therefore, even if it is not seen to be in accordance with the opposing side, attachment, this sign of inference is still possessed of remainder. Explaining the nature of being possessed of remainder is erroneous. It is erroneous because merely not seeing the opposing side does not necessarily determine the opposite. Therefore, the suitability of body, senses, and mind is not certain, because there are other causes that have become the proximate cause to be relied upon. Therefore, existence is not inferred from these. If it is not a cause and not a result, and what is called "otherness" - the non-self-nature of special tastes, etc. - by which form, etc., are understood, for example, in the darkness, tasting the taste of mango and madhulunga, thereby understanding the difference of form associated with it; smelling the smell of fire, thereby understanding the form associated with it, how is this included in inference? If it is neither non-existence nor non-non-existence, therefore it would be another sign. It is said in reply: That is also because taste, etc., are related to a single collection gathered together, thereby causing form, etc., to understand taste, etc., this understanding is called "inferring the dharma of the cause," which means that this understanding has become the inference of the dharma of the cause. For example, inferring the collection of fire, etc., from smoke is similar to inferring the changes of firewood such as ash and charcoal. If this is inferring a result other than the cause, and not inferring the dharma of the cause, then even if it is inferring a result other than the cause, it is also inferring a cause like that, and if something is inferred, other results will also be inferred, which is inferring the ability to produce form, but it is not inferring other results by means of an understanding different from inferring the cause. Why? It is said in reply: Like this, the cause of taste, the proximate cause of form, the accompanying condition endowed with ability, produces taste. The proximate cause of taste is the proximate cause of form that is able to produce its own result.

It is necessary to rely on co-action. The transformation of firewood is ash, smoke, and charcoal. Its proximate cause is firewood. Therefore, the co-actor is fire. How it produces smoke is just like that. If it is determined that multiple things arise from one, why is that? It is explained: The self-cause of taste, if it is not consistent in producing results, then the proximate cause of taste, the tendency of its own result to manifest, is the acting cause of the causes of the proximate cause of form. The characteristic of producing results and being consistent, the acting cause of the proximate cause of taste, is also the co-actor of the acting cause of the causes of the proximate cause of form, the acting cause of the proximate cause of taste is said to be so, meaning it possesses the co-actor of the acting cause of the proximate cause of form. Therefore, one must be disgusted with form, etc. Therefore, when inferring what kind of taste arises from the proximate cause of form, which tends towards its own result, in a state of having a co-actor, it is inferring form. It is not possible to infer form separately from inferring the cause. Inferring the cause itself is like that, and not otherwise. Therefore, this is said to be inferring the dharma of the cause. Then, how is understanding future form from seeing taste inferring the dharma of the cause? It is explained: From inferring form, etc. from taste, etc., one can only understand past and simultaneous things, but not future things. Whatever appearance of taste, etc., is understood to arise from the proximate cause of form, directly or indirectly, then, how is it reasonable to understand present and past things, but not future things? Because present things confuse future things. Future things will be obstructed by being related to other causes, or may not exist because of being incomplete. Determining that the sun will not appear at night, and seeing stars determining that other stars will appear, is not inference, but determination.
