If the means of accomplishment can be established from the action, then to refute the fault of mutual dependence, it is said "to what extent" etc. Then, how can the object of what is to be accomplished and the means of accomplishment be established? It is said "of what is to be accomplished and the means of accomplishment" etc. If one doubts, is it not the case that there is a relationship other than its own nature? To explain "it itself is not established here," it is said "what is said is non-manifestation" etc. Why? It is said "those" etc., referring to non-manifestation and non-existence. If it is said, this is related to "if it is known that things do not exist." By what is it known? By a means of knowledge other than non-manifestation. Therefore, because other means of knowledge know that things do not exist, therefore things do not exist. Alternatively, if, in order to establish the explanation, only through non-manifestation can it be known that things do not exist. If again, because of mutual dependence, both cannot be completely established, even so, the characteristic of mutual recognition, its result will be established, if one doubts, it is said "because of that itself," that is, because of the non-establishment itself. The result of mutual action will not be established, that is, it will not arise. Therefore, to explain "that is not," it is said "therefore." If one admits the explanation of its own nature, then it is said "its own nature." Here, with these explanations, the first half of the *Pramanavarttika* was spoken. Afterwards, in order to explain the second half, it is said "afterwards, the term is to be established." Keeping the dispute to be explained in mind, what is said is "appearance." How is it determined that this is that? If it is said, because there are also things separate from wisdom etc., then, even if it is the result of not seeing what can be observed, wisdom and sound have no doubt, it is certain. How are those determined to be that? It is said "if appearance is not seen." Therefore, even if it is the result of that, those will certainly be established. Therefore, the suitability to be the object of the term 'non-existence' can only be established through the nature of non-manifestation itself. Another dispute is "the term also." Answering by explaining the root verse with the meaning that should be undertaken, it is said "in this way." The answer to the second dispute is:

Just "that much" means, that is, by reason of non-perception alone. Why? Because it is "permissibility." If non-perception exists, isn't it just that some do not use terms? So, how is permissibility the nature of non-perception in relation to that? It is "having mind." "That" refers to seeing the non-perception of appearance. "If body and speech do not use terms, how does mind use terms?" It is "without entity." If the two do not apply, how is non-perception a valid cognition? It is "valid cognition." It is realization, that is, knowing non-existence is established, but not by establishing terms such as body. Therefore, in that case also, only the permissibility of the nature of non-perception is established. Because in that way, non-perception is unfailingly established as a term for non-existence, therefore, even if there is an object of the nature of non-perception of appearance, due to ignorance, for clay lumps and so on, not using terms such as non-name to be realized here, it is merely to remind the unspoken of the sign. What kind of thing in the world is suitable to appear but is not perceived, so it is established as an object of the term of non-existence, and what you have also used the term of non-existence for is similar to this. Therefore, this is an established object, and it is in accordance with the Dharma, so enter into the object of the term of non-existence as well. "Collection" means the sound of reason is known to be established. How is the term of non-existence established? It is "how." Well, how does sound become different without different meanings? It is "for the two." If the cause and effect themselves are not merely from following and reversing, how is its name established? It is "seeing and." The word "result" here means expressing this meaning, such as "this does not exist" and so on. "If it becomes like that" means even if it does not exist, it becomes existent. The connection of the characteristics of cause and effect has no other meaning, because even without fire it arises. "If it is like that" means it arises without it.
